The latest wardrobe trend of combining long-lasting capsule pieces with small seasonal updates has filtered through to swimwear seeing ladies travel light without stifling their style. Women are using their imaginations to create brilliant beach looks without breaking the bank or their luggage handles.According to swimwear manufacturer Kiniki, more women are mixing and matching individual items rather than spending more on several bikini sets. We have always sold our bikinis as individual tops and bottoms instead of sets to give women flexibility in sizes, styles and colours, says John Walker, founder of Kiniki.com, which sells more than a million items a year. Our customers are increasingly combining staples such black bikini bottoms with our on-trend, tan-through bikini tops and sarongs. The patented tan-through pieces are proving a big hit with women who do not want strap marks. It looks like the Gok Wan effect is hitting the beach this summer. Women are varying one simple look rather than buying a different bikini for each day as they might have done a year or two ago.

Skin Disease Is A Cause Of High Levels Of Stress And Anxiety

| June 19, 2009

A survey conducted by the British Skin Foundation gives a thought provoking insight into the nine million people who live with a skin disease in the UK. 23% said that they had suffered from an isolated incident of bullying, with a further 18% revealing that they suffered from regular bullying from their workplace or school. A staggering 92% had been on the receiving end of unwanted remarks and stares. The survey was conducted to better understand how skin disease affects sufferers in the UK. 256 people were asked a series of questions relating to their skin disease and the impact it had on their life. The results show that the effects of skin disease go far beyond that of simply having to apply some cream. Four out of every ten people who took part said that their skin disease was a cause of high levels of stress and anxiety. One in ten participants said they had been hospitalized for their skin problems, 11% said they had taken time off work or education and 19% said they had regular loss of sleep as a direct result of their disease. The results also highlighted the effects felt by those around the sufferer. When asked if they felt they were affected by someone elses skin disorder, 33% said they suffered from a lack of sleep and just under half of respondents stated they felt stressed or anxious by the other persons skin disease.Worryingly, when asked about what forms of support they relied on for dealing with their skin disease, a quarter said they didnt rely on anyone or any service for help. Only 6 people out of the 256 relied on a patient support group, with the majority opting for friends and family (51%) and over a third relied on their GP for support. The British Skin Foundations Chief Executive, Matthew Patey, is determined to change the situation. He says: Its about time people took skin disease seriously. We need to break down the misconception that skin disease is nothing to be concerned about. On the contrary, thousands of people will die this year alone from a skin disease. Although the survey offers only a tiny glimpse at what sufferers go through on a daily basis, we often forget that the effects are not limited to the symptomatic issues, but often branch out into discrimination and unfair treatment outside of the home.Key findings from the snapshot survey:Treatment Suffered from an isolated incident of bullying 22.6% Suffered from regular bullying 18.1% Had unwanted comments and stares 91.6% Received unfair treatment at work 16.1%The extent skin disease has affected their life: High levels of stress or anxiety 42.8% Regular loss of sleep 19.3% Hospitalised for a period of time 10.7%Being affected by someone elses skin disorder: Help apply creams/administer treatment 69.8% Loss of sleep 32.6% Suffer from high levels of stress or anxiety 48.8% Took regular time off work/education to look after the sufferer 11.6%Forms of support: Talking to family and friends 50.8% Talking to a patient support group 2.5% Relying on the local GP 38.1% None of the above 25.4%

A Third Of Women In The UK Are Embarrassed By The Appearance Of Their Teeth

| June 19, 2009

With summer fast approaching, many of you will be thinking about how youre going to tone up your body and fit into that bikini for those hours of sun-worshipping on the beach. After all, there is never a more important time to look your best. But, have you considered that one accessory which will help you perfect your summer look a dazzling straight smile? A recent survey by Invisalign found that over a third (36%) of women in the UK are embarrassed by the appearance of their teeth, with 29% wishing they had straight, even teeth. However, nearly two thirds (65%) said that a good smile would make them feel more confident, just what you need when you step onto the beach!According to research, overseas trips are part of the fabric of British society, with many Brits taking more than one holiday – and we do like to look our best while were mingling with our glamorous international friends. British women spend 7bn on a pre-holiday makeover to look glamorous and feel confident on the beach. When you consider the average cost of a holiday for two including flights, hotel and transfers costs 1,050, and add the money exchanged for foreign currency, before setting off, at an average of 318, the pre-holiday makeover essentials including clothes, shoes, accessories and beauty treatments at 300, then you have an average of over 1600 spent on a holiday before you even consider what gets spent on the credit cards (an average of 799 in 2006).If you rein in on that spending and took just one holiday this year, you could invest in your smile with Align Technology’s Invisalign to achieve your perfect smile. As dental practitioner Dr Paul Humber explains, A holiday lasts two weeks but a great smile lasts a lifetime.Over 1 million patients worldwide have found a reason to smile again with Invisalign. Whether your teeth need minor improvements or more extensive adjustments, Invisalign could certainly help. Virtually invisible, (even close up) Invisalign uses a series of removable clear aligners to gradually move the teeth and help you achieve a straighter smile. Invisalign is a comfortable, non-invasive treatment option that may help you achieve that perfect smile youve dreamed of without the embarrassment of fixed metal braces.Remember, summer trends will come and go but you can always depend on flashing your smile to perfect and finish your style. A simple visit to an Invisalign certified practitioner can give you that transformation youve been looking for your perfect smile.

We Can Trick Ourselves Into Feeling Full And Maintain A Healthy Body Weight

| June 19, 2009

Evidence presented by leading scientists at the British Nutrition Foundation’s (BNF) ‘Satiation, satiety and their effects on eating behaviour’ conference in London, shows that energy density the energy (or calories) per gram of food, may provide a key to tackling the alarming rise in obesity. By 2050, it is estimated that over a half of UK adults, and about a quarter of all children under 16 could be obese. Understanding how we can manipulate the energy density of the diet can help us maintain a healthy body weight, says Bridget Benelam, Nutrition Scientist at the BNF. We can trick ourselves into feeling full. By changing the energy density of a meal we can achieve the same feeling of satisfaction, while eating less energy than we would usually.Energy densityDr Barbara Rolls, from Pennsylvania State University, has conducted extensive research into the effects of energy density on feeling full. Speaking at the conference she said: Focusing on the energy density of the diet is an effective way of controlling hunger and reducing energy intake. A study of obese women found that a low fat and low energy density diet was more effective for weight loss over one year, than a low fat, higher energy density diet. These women lowered the energy density of their diets by eating more water-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables. They ate more food by weight, felt less hungry and more satisfied, and lost more weight. It looks like energy density is a route to a healthy weight in the long term; research has shown that a low energy density diet aids weight maintenance. To calculate energy density of a food, simply divide the amount of energy (calories) by the weight of food in grams: for example, a 180g sandwich with 360 calories would have an energy density of 360/180 = 2 calories/gram. BNF advises people to eat mostly foods that are either, very low (less than 0.6 kcal/g), low (0.6 to 1.5 kcal/g) or medium (1.5-4.0 kcal/g) in energy density, and consume higher energy density foods (4-9 kcal/g) in small amounts. To help people put our advice into practice weve developed a chart, showing the energy density of a range of foods and dishes, says Benelam. Have a liquid lunchA low energy density diet can be achieved by eating more foods with a high water content; this includes dishes where water is added during cooking, such as soups and stews, foods like pasta and rice that absorb water during cooking, and foods that are naturally high in water, such as fruit and vegetables. According to research from the US, soups can make you feel fuller than the equivalent amount of solid food. But the BNF advises people not to assume that the same effect can be achieved by just taking a drink with a meal. Studies suggest that liquids need to be added to foods or dishes to make an impact on the feeling of fullness. Some initial research using smoothies even suggests that just adding air to food/liquid can help you feel full.Bulking upResearch has also shown that people tend to eat the same weight of food each day. So, if we reduce the energy in the food but keep the weight of the food the same, we consume less energy without feeling hungrier.Fill up on fibreChoosing more high fibre foods is also important because fibre helps to keep energy density low. Also speaking at the BNF conference, Professor Rob Welch, of the University of Ulster highlights the value of fruits and vegetables as sources of fibre Not only are fruits and vegetables high in water and low in energy density, but they are also rich in fibre, which can impact on feelings of fullness in a number of ways.Go easy on the boozeMany people forget to count the calorie cost of alcoholic drinks when watching their weight but they should also be aware of alcohols effects on appetite. Research shows that drinking alcohol before or during a meal can stimulate appetite and encourage people to eat more!Following the tips from the BNF can help you reap the rewards of a low energy density diet. Sara Stanner, Science Programme Manager at the British Nutrition Foundation says: you can lose weight without eating like a rabbit! Try bulking up your meals with low energy density foods. Add more vegetables to a spaghetti Bolognese, eat bread rather than dry crackers, have a chocolate mousse rather than a chocolate bar, or add more salad into your sandwich. She adds Focussing our attention on the energy density of the diet could pay huge dividends, in terms of encouraging a healthy body weight.

Pigment Corrective System Reduces The Appearance Of Irregular Pigmentation

| June 18, 2009

Perricone MD has introduced a new safe and effective alternative to hydroquinone that will treat hyper-pigmentation and age spots, provide anti-aging benefits and brighten the skins overall appearance.Sun damage, chronological aging and hormonal changes can lead to an increase in discolouration and dark spots on the skin, the result of melanin production. Dr Perricone introduces an innovative new system formulated with a unique powerful ingredient Pycnogenol. Pycnogenol is a natural plant extract originating from the bark of the maritime pine tree which grows exclusively along the unspoiled coast of South Western France. Pycnogenols powerful anti-oxidant properties help to combat the oxidative stress that is involved in the over production of skin pigments. When used synergistically Pigment Corrective supplements and topical will: Visibly improve the appearance and size of discolouration and brown spots Brighten the overall appearance of the skin Protect against further photodamage Gently exfoliate damaged cells Smoothes the look of fine lines and improves elasticityClinical studies after weeks of use demonstrated-when used as a system: 100% reported their skin felt and looked renewed 96% reported a decrease in the appearance of brown spots, skin and a healthier appearance 92% reported a decrease in the appearance of new age spots 89% reported a decrease on the appearance of skin blotches or discolorations 82% reported an improvement in the appearance of skin texture and brightness 79% reported seeing a reduction in the appearance of lines between the browsKey ingredients in the Pigment Corrective System:TOPICAL: Pycnogenol a natural, safe and effective alternative to hydroquinone to correct hyperpigmentation and improve skins tone and elasticity Vitamin C Ester brightens skins overall appearance DMAE enhances facial contours and diminishes the appearance of lines and wrinklesSUPPLEMENT: Pycnogenol a natural, safe and effective alternative to hydroquinone to correct hyperpigmentation and improve skins tone and elasticity Alpha Lipoic Acid provides antioxidant protection while decreasing puffiness, discolouration and minimising the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles DMAE enhances facial contours and diminishes the appearance of lines and wrinklesDr. Perricone recommends taking one supplement a day, preferably with meals. Unprotected Exposure To The Sun Can Lead To A Range Of Eye Health Problems

| June 18, 2009

According to the results of an independent IPSOS survey, nearly two thirds of the British public are neglecting their eyesight. The report, commissioned by Transitions Optical, has revealed that only 41% of the population go for an eye examination at least every 2 years whilst 81% of us visit the dentist over the same period.Ironically, when polled on the importance of all five senses, sight was viewed as the most valuable by the majority of respondents [93%] and the one we fear losing the most [65%]. Yet a quarter of respondents still think that they only need to see an eye doctor when they have vision problems. Regular eye checks, however, are a must since many eye problems have no obvious symptoms and 50% of vision loss can be prevented with an eye exam. One significant area which is often overlooked is the long-term unprotected exposure to the suns UVA and UVB rays which can lead to a range of eye health problems including age-related macular degeneration, cataracts and other eye conditions that can compromise the quality of our vision. As Roland Allen, Business Director Transitions Optical UK explains: Damage from UV exposure is cumulative, building each and every time our eyes are exposed to the sun. Its great that everyone is aware of the importance of protecting their skin by applying sun cream, now they need to apply the same principle to protecting their eyes not just in the summer, but all year round. He adds: Another common misconception is that UV damage is only at its highest in the summer, with 87% of respondents stating that this was the case. However, UV exposure to the eyes is linked with sun intensity and angle, so exposure in mornings and evenings can have a greater impact than at midday. Even on cloudy days, up to 80% of invisible UV rays can pass through the clouds, meaning that eye damage is a concern throughout the year, whatever the weather .The worrying results certainly appear to turn the biblical saying an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth right on its head according to Rosie Gavzey, Optometrist and Director of The Eyecare Trust. She explains: This research indicates that we are more anxious about losing a tooth than an eye! Its alarming that so many people in the UK still fail to have their eyes tested on a regular basis, and how little they think about protecting their eyes. Hopefully these results will remind people to pay more attention to eye protection in the future. The most convenient and effective way for spectacle wearers to protect their eyes is to wear photochromic lenses such as Transitions lenses which remain clear indoors and at night, but change tint to cut glare when worn outdoors, boosting comfort and reducing eye fatigue. More importantly, they also block 100% UV rays in all light conditions. They protect the eyes from: Glare automatically adapting to outdoor light intensity, thus enhancing vision quality and preventing squinting and temporary blindness Eye fatigue constantly evening out light variations, ensuring eye comfort all day long UV rays blocking 100% of UVA and UVB rays, helping to preserve eye health and well-beingRoland Allen concludes: With 93% of photochromic lens wearers stating that they would recommend them to friends and almost every wearer stating that they are happy with their choice (98%) , photochromic lenses are an increasingly popular eye care option. Transitions lenses fit in any frame and can be worn indoors and out. They are the convenient, comfortable and stylish solution to maintaining healthy sight.Other key findings from the IPSOS research which reveal misconceptions about risks to eyesight include: Only 7% were spontaneously aware that extended exposure to UV rays can cause damage to the eyes but this increased to 75% when prompted. Reading in dim light was cited by 65% of respondents as damaging to the eyes whilst 57% said sitting too close to the TV. Both are myths in the sense that whilst they cause eye strain and fatigue and temporarily decrease acuity, this does subside after rest. 43% were unaware that poor nutrition can be harmful to the eyes and 55% didnt realise that smoking can also have a detrimental effect.

New Chairman For The British Institute And Association Of Electrolysis

| June 15, 2009

The British Institute and Association of Electrolysis BIAE is a non profit making organisation founded from the amalgamation of the Institute of Electrolysis and the British Association of Electrolysists. The annual AGM for the British Institute and Association of Electrolysis took place in April 2009, at the MIC Centre in Euston, London. During the morning the members listened to three speakers presenting subjects relevent to electrolysists. The first was all about financial planning, very pertinent in this difficult economic climate. The second presentation was given by Dr Elizabeth Owen a consultant Gynaecologist. A riveting talk on Poly Cystic Ovaries and Hirsutism held the audience rapt. “As electrolysists we are one of the frontline professions that will deal with women who suffer PCOS,” said Mandy Painting, Chairman. “The members were able to ask a great many questions about what to look for in our clients that might indicate a visit to the doctor,” she continued. The third presentation was by a client of one of the members. This transgender client shared her experience of pre-surgery epilation required in sensitive and intimate areas. A very interesting and thought provoking talk. “Members were able to ask her questions that would be awkward to ask someone in the normal course of conversation,” said Mandy Painting. “Many members reported afterwards that they would be able to take on the delicate treatment if asked in the future,” added Helen Graham, board member. The business meeting in the afternoon raised various issues from members. A lively exchange of views between professionals proved once again the value of these meetings. The new board members were introduced and Mandy Painting took the Chair. She thanked the outgoing Chairman, Helen Graham, for her hard work and tireless commitment to the BIAE over the last three years. Mandy only hoped she could follow her example equally as well. Members of the board are: Helen Graham, Eunice McBride, Marny Abercromby, Denise Wheeler, June Norman, Nona Girling and Suzannie Knight. The secretary is Nicky Wilsher.

Aqua Dental Spa Restores Smile After The Ravages Of Smoking And Untreated Gum Disease

| June 8, 2009

National Smile Month is an annual event held by the British Dental Foundation to highlight the importance of oral health. This year it takes place between 17th May and 16th June and the theme is Look after Yourself Brush for Health.A London woman who nearly lost her teeth through poor oral care has finally discovered 21st century dentistry, after decades of fearing the dentists chair. She leaves behind memories of heavy handed 1960s dentistry and can smile now with confidence. Linda Brewin, aged 63, had her smile restored at London cosmetic dentistry centre Aqua Dental Spa after the ravages of smoking and untreated gum disease caused her gums to shrink, leading to an unsightly appearance and the loss of teeth. As National Smile Month approaches highlighting the links between poor oral hygiene and serious conditions such as heart disease, strokes and diabetes Linda urges people to put a brave face on and visit the dentist regularly and most importantly, quit smoking.Says Linda: My experiences of going to the dentist have always been horrible and like many other people, it was something I dreaded. Proper hygienist appointments werent available when I was growing up and into early adulthood, the dentist would just give teeth a quick scrape and pull out any bad ones, then youd be on your way. In stark contrast, I love the soothing and calming environment of Aqua Dental Spa and Dr Mainis gentle manner it is very different to any other dentistry experience Ive had. He detected my gum problems immediately and referred me to the specialist. I also decided to have veneers to my top teeth as they were crooked and discoloured.According to Dr Maini, lead clinician at Aqua Dental Spa and member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry: Linda was unaware she had gum disease and if left untreated, she would almost certainly have lost her teeth. Older generations have grown up with an old school style of dentistry and many people of that age bracket wont even attend the dentist for routine check-ups at all. Things have changed drastically in dentistry and with new technology and advances in training, there are many options now available. Linda was a particularly nervous patient so we gave her a light sedation and fitted veneers and bridges to improve the appearance of her smile – while treatment is ongoing from the specialist to help her keep the gum disease under control.Linda added: I would always hide my mouth when I laughed or smiled and felt very self-conscious about my teeth but now my smile has been restored so has my confidence. I cant believe how comfortable I am with going to the dentist now. Dr Maini is very reassuring and very genuine – Im just so pleased I can go somewhere where everyone is friendly and kind. The state of my teeth and the discovery of the gum disease made me realise the seriousness of the situation. Faced with the very real possibility of losing my teeth I have given up smoking and follow the advice Ive been given religiously. Theres no way Im going to jeopardise my new smile!Aqua Dental Spa combines cosmetic dentistry and facial aesthetics to provide a holistic approach to the smile. Clinic founder Dr Maini believes that although great things can be achieved through cosmetic dentistry, other aspects of the smile such as the lips and face itself can dramatically affect the end result. Aqua Dental Spa offers facial aesthetics such as slight enhancing of the lips or smoothing out nose to mouth lines to help patients achieve the best result.Other services offered include veneers, tooth coloured fillings, whitening, bridges and Invisalign (invisible braces). General dentistry services are also available such as hygiene services, root canal work, dentures and preventative care. In addition, the facial aesthetics services include lip definition and enhancement with cosmetic fillers and facial line and wrinkle reduction using Botox. Dr Maini is fully qualified to carry out these procedures and is a Gold Member of the International Academy of Advanced Facial Aesthetics. The centre also offers relaxing spa services such as head and neck massages before and after treatment, soothing hand massages, scented neck cushions and gel eye masks.
