DermaVisage allows therapists to choose their preferred type of Microdermabrasion for effective anti-ageing treatments

Journalist | July 30, 2010

The Carlton Group has launched DermaVisage, a new anti-ageing machine in its Carlton Professional range. DermaVisage includes both Diamond and Crystal Microdermabrasion as well as Colour Therapy all in one compact machine. This innovative new machine features cutting edge technology for a results driven treatment.

DermaVisage allows therapists to choose their preferred type of Microdermabrasion. Both Diamond and Crystal Microdermabrasion offer effective anti-ageing treatments, taking the natural process of skin renewal, which slows down as we age, and hastening it.

The Diamond Microdermabrasion uses the hardest natural substance, diamonds, to effectively abrade the skin, smoothing and regenerating it. As there are no crystals, and therefore no vacuum is required to remove them, the treatment is fast and virtually silent. The two, treatment specific, variable speeds and choice of two diamond tipped heads, which are supplied with the machine, allow the treatment to be tailored for any skin type, from sensitive to oily. Furthermore, there are no consumables, making it a hugely cost effective treatment for salon and spa owners.

The Crystal Microdermabrasion uses a controlled flow of ultra clean Aluminium Oxide crystals, which are set in motion using vacuum. The Aluminium Oxide crystals are incredibly hard, the only substance harder, as previously mentioned, is diamonds, which means that it is possible to produce an extremely fine crystal. This crystal is highly effective at abrading the outer layer of dead skin cells. DermaVisage works using a closed system. This means that the crystals only flow when the hand piece is placed on the skin. This ensures absolute safety when using the machine, especially when treating areas close to the eyes. In combination with the DermaVisage product range, the machine may be used to regenerate the skin for fabulous anti-ageing results. Crystal Microdermabrasion may also be used to treat stretch marks and acne scarring.

Used in combination with either of the Microdermabrasion treatments or separately, the Colour Therapy treatment stimulates the skins cells to facilitate change. The inclusion of four colours (red, green, blue and yellow) using LED lights and set at varying wavelengths offers a wide range of benefits. For example, green cools and reduces redness, blue reduces swelling and offers antibacterial effects for the treatment of acne, red rejuvenates and stimulates the lymphatic system, whilst yellow tones and smoothes the skin, as well as promoting the production of collagen. Four pulsed modes are also included which allow the wavelengths to penetrate the skin at different levels providing stimulation for the epidermis, dermis, subcutaneous tissue and deep into the circulatory system.

The number of treatments required is dependant on the skin condition. A one off treatment may be offered to give a fabulous bloom to the skin, whilst some conditions may require between 6-10 sessions and thereafter a maintenance session every 5-6 weeks.

Available in both white and silver to suit the aesthetics of any college, salon or spa, DermaVisage is included in the Carlton Professional range of equipment which offers quality, value for money and durability, all from a brand which places trust and caring for its customers at its heart.

Aussie men’s grooming secret exposed at Barneys NYC store

Journalist | July 29, 2010

Could ancient Traditional Indigenous Plant and Fruit Extracts sourced from the Australian Outback and Tropical Rainforest be responsible for American women swooning over such macho Aussie men as Sam Worthington, Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Eric Bana, Julian McMahon and Simon Baker?

The Grooming Secret of those ruggedly handsome Aussie men has finally been exposed at Barneys NYC store! Since launching back in 1999, Australian Mens Grooming pioneers, VitaMan have found global success and a loyal following with little marketing or advertising in over 30 countries including major markets such as France, Italy, Spain, Japan and Russia with the UK, Taiwan, China and Hong Kong coming on board over the last 6 months.

In late 2009, VitaMan finally shaved a path right up to the shores of Manhattan NYC, successfully making its inaugural entry into the US Male Grooming Market with an Exclusive Launch at Barneys NYC Mens Apothecary. Since then this natural brand has been attracting NYCs own well styled man with their masculine and stylish packaging, unique natural masculine aromas while offering one of the worlds most comprehensive Grooming Solutions Range that includes Shave, Body, Face, Anti-aging, Hair. Travel and Tri-Sports pack.

VitaMan was soon rolled out into several other top Barneys stores nationwide, and within last several months have achieved amazing success, where VitaMan is now confirmed as:
No.1 Selling Mens Brand Barneys San Francisco
No.2 Selling Mens Brand Barneys New York
No.3 Selling Mens Brand Barneys Scottsdale
No.4 Selling Mens Brand Barneys L.A.

Last month VitaMan then became available in Bloomingdales SOHO NYC store, where it outsold every other major mens grooming brand within their first two weeks on the shelves.

Interestingly, VitaMan had prior to its official launch in the US, been selected as the exclusive Mens brand of choice to supply both the US Academy and TV Emmy Awards Celebrity Gift Bags. I highly recommend you head down to your nearest Barneys Men Apothecary for some free samples, for surely its a lot cheaper than a trip to the Land Down Under!

VitaMan stands apart from all other Mens Grooming brands due to the use of unique natural Australian Native Plant, Herb and Fruit Extracts that have a history of use by Indigenous Australians of over 30,000 years. VitaMan was also the first Company worldwide to develop and offer Spas masculine de-stressing and effective Body Treatments exclusively designed for men, including their Signature Massage Technique that is now used in Hotel, Resort and Day Spas throughout the world.

Beauty tips to protect your skin this summer

Journalist | July 29, 2010

Excessive sun exposure (skin dehydration, pigmentation, prickly heat, sunburn) followed by dry, hot winds and overzealous office air conditioning can easily damage delicate cells and cause premature ageing. Summer can clearly be a hazardous time for our skin.

1. Lets start with the obvious
Use an oil-free and fragrance-free SPF all day over entire face and body. You really should be using something as high as SPF 30.

2. Keep it cool
Keep your skin cool especially if you have sensitive skin. If you have rosacea, eczema or sensitive skin, try to keep skin as cool as possible by keeping out of direct sun or keeping skincare products in the fridge. (It is also best to steer clear of saunas and steam, because they can aggravate your skin condition). Rosacea, which causes excessive flushing, broken blood vessels and/or acne-like red bumps, can be exacerbated when blood vessels dilate in response to the skin becoming overheated. Heat also draws water out of the skin, so eczema can become worse, sensitive skin can become irritated and atopic dermatitis (a rash caused by skin allergy or irritation) may itch more intensely. Normal skin will de-hydrate in heat, so moisturise moisturise! Try chilling OSKIAs Eye Wonder and applying a thick layer (for a treatment mask) or a thin layer if in a rush, to cool delicate skin.

3. Always moisturise, but switch to oil free creams and serums.
It is always tempting to miss out on a good moisturiser and eye cream during sticky summer months as your skin will be producing more sebum generating that recognisable summer shine and clogging pores, but your skin still needs serious moisture. Replace heavy winter, oil-based creams with lighter, oil-free or water-based serums or emulsions. Try OSKIAs Nutri-Active Day Cream, which is super light in texture but carries a punch in the nutrient and anti-ageing active department. Or OSKIAs Get Up & Glow, a water-based serum full of hydrating Hyaluronic Acid, brighteners and anti-ageing actives, such as Niacinamide (reduces pigmentation), Swiss Apple Stem Cells (protects skins DNA and reduces wrinkles), Butterbur (a fantastic anti-histamine), Ribose (an oxygenator that rejuvenates skin cells and increases ATP energy to breathe life back into dull skin), and natural light reflecting pigments perfect for a natural summer glow.

4. Less is always more
Switch heavy mascaras and eyebrow pencils for eye lash and brow tinting. These are especially brilliant if you cant stay out of the water, have very fine or light eyebrows eye lashes, have contact lenses, want to steer clear of Racoon eyes or simply want to enhance your looks. There are many different eyelash and eyebrow tint colours (including blues, browns, blacks and greys), so choose one that complements your skin and hair colouring perfectly.

5. Dewy skin is gorgeous.
Don’t over powder your face because you’re afraid it’s a grease pit. Instead, try blotting papers.

6. Remember your cleavage
The neck and dcolletage are too often neglected and can suffer from premature ageing without you realizing. Your face might look wrinkle free, but any man will tell you that this area (once so smooth and plump) can reveal a ladys real age. As a rule of thumb, treat your neck and dcolletage as an extension of your face, continuing product application right the way down, be it cleanser, toner, moisturiser, serum, exfoliant or treatment mask. The earlier you start getting into this routine, the more grateful you will be later on down the line.

7. Exfoliate regularly
Our skin sheds cells every minute of every day, which results in dull, dry looking skin, particularly sun exposed skin as it dehydrates quickly. However much moisturiser you apply, your skin will never look glowing without removing these dead skin cells. Rejuvenation treatments such as exfoliations and nurturing masks restore the skins health and balance, so to ensure a healthy glow for the summer months, be sure to exfoliate 12 times a week. OSKIAs Micro-Exfoliating Balm contains the finest silica and MSM granules, which dissolve on contact with water, to buff away tired cells and stimulate regeneration, but also contains a nutrient-rich balm that will leave skin feeling supper soft and healthy.

8. But, try to avoid using body and facial scrubs with coarse granules as they can scratch delicate, sun exposed skin. Instead either opt for an exfoliant containing fine silica granules or AHAs which will both evenly exfoliate as well as stimulate regeneration and improve the tone and texture of the skin.

9. Remember your hands
I am always amazed at how smooth my hands are when I come back from holiday. Needless to say, this is due to applying endless suntan creams, exfoliants, aftersuns, marks and moisturisers countless times during the day and night, which obviously I dont do when back at home. Hands, like your cleavage and neck, are age indicators, so try to exfoliate your hands a few times a week, apply a rich moisturiser and always apply an SPF to your hands, as you would your face.

10. Your upper arms.
If, like about 40% of the population, you suffer from Keratosis Pilaris (those annoying little red bumps on the back of your upper arms) then its likely youll want to rid these before you expose you arms this summer. Whilst there is no definitive cure for this condition (unfortunately it is a very common genetic follicular condition which causes an excess of Keratin production that accumulates within the hair follicles forming numerous tiny rough bumps on the skin and commonly found in people with very dry skin and/or a vitamin A deficiency), daily exoliating or using a good natural body brush, and moisturising with a vitamin rich cream can definitely ease these pesky pimples.

11. Prepare your skin internally before hitting the sun.
Taking MSM supplements and following an anti-inflammatory diet can help reduce potential skin damage and premature ageing and keep skin super healthy. Inflammation is one of the biggest causes of skin damage and premature ageing, as well as a host of other health problems. Thomasina Miers has put together a delicious recipe that puts together some of the best anti-inflammatory ingredients mackerel and avocados for their high Omega 3 content, ginger for its gingerols content (more specifically 6-gingerol), chilli (also high in vitamin A and C), olive oil, pumpkin and sesame seeds and oil.

Complete a total body firming workout in a fraction of the usual time required

Journalist | July 29, 2010

Imagine being able to complete a total body firming workout that targets all your trouble zones and burns a wheelie-bin full of calories, but in a fraction of the usual time required. It might sound too good to be true but Dean Hodgkin has cracked it in his latest DVD, The Express Workout, with his revolutionary method of stacking exercises.

Most of us are on the lookout for new, effective ways to tighten up a particular problem area or shift a pound or two, especially at this time of year, when the thought of squeezing into a bikini and baring all on the beach brings us out in a cold sweat. However, time isnt generally on our side, with the recent Health and Fitness Ombudsman Survey confirming this is the biggest barrier to us achieving our shape-up goals.

By stacking, or combining exercises its possible to target three or even four body parts in a single movement, so dramatically cutting the time it takes to perform an all-over sculpting routine. This unique workout will push your body to the edge in only 8 exercises, but that is the key to its success in guaranteeing results – its all about the intensity. So get ready to dig deep, keeping in mind that it only takes around 30 minutes and the results will be well worth the toil, as this year you’ll hit the beach turning heads and not stomachs!

If youre looking to shed your winter layers before your holiday in double-quick time, dont miss this high speed train.

THE EXPRESS WORKOUT is priced at 9-99

The USU-HJF Military Medicine Symposium will gather prominent civilian and military researchers and clinicians from across the United States to discuss current research and identify opportunities to collaborate and share information that could speed treatments to wounded warriors. The symposium also will bring together a broad spectrum of participants from military health leadership, federal agencies and private research institutions to philanthropists and charitable foundations, representatives of industry, and policymakers.

Co-hosted by the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) and the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine, Inc. (HJF), the symposium will be held Sept. 23 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C. Organized through HJF’s Center for Public-Private Partnerships, the symposium encourages military-civilian collaboration as a means of expanding resources for the military medical system and of spurring advances in medical technology to benefit wounded, ill and injured servicemembers.

The 2010 symposium will be made up of three expert-discussion panels on regenerative medicine, suicide prevention and resilience, and civilian-military collaborations. The final panel will be comprised of a variety of prominent leaders in military medicine.

Regenerative Medicine

Opening speaker Army Colonel Robert Hale, D.D.S., chief of oral and maxillofacial surgery at San Antonio Military Medical Center, will address the potential role regenerative medicine could play in treating wounded warriors with disabling cranial, jaw and facial injuries. Commissioned in the U.S. Army Reserves in 1977, Hale was called to active duty in 2003, serving tours in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Following Hale’s presentation, a panel on regenerative medicine will feature experts from the Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine, USU’s Center for Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine, U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research and Kennedy Krieger Institute.

Suicide Prevention and Resilience

Army Lieutenant Colonel (P) Rebecca Porter will provide an overview of servicemember behavioral health care and treatment. Porter, recently appointed as director of behavioral health proponency in the Office of the U.S. Army Surgeon General, has experience with the Army’s family programs policy and currently focuses on behavioral health policy.

The panel on suicide prevention and resilience will facilitate discussion among U.S. researchers and clinicians from the Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center at Ft. Detrick, Md.; Restoration and Resilience Center at Fort Bliss, Texas; Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C.; Department of Veterans Affairs; and the Red Sox Foundation.

Opportunities for Civilian-Military Collaboration

Lieutenant General Charles Green, M.D., and Vice Admiral Adam Robinson, M.D., surgeons general of the Air Force and Navy, respectively, and Major General Patricia Horoho, deputy surgeon general of the Army, along with an official from TRICARE Management Activity, and the medical officer of the U.S. Marine Corps and Joint Staff Surgeon, will address private-public partnerships as a means of bridging gaps in the military medical system.

Prior to assuming his current assignment, Green served as assistant surgeon general for health care operations and as deputy Air Force surgeon general. He also served as commander of three hospitals and Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, and as command surgeon for three major commands.

Among his most recent assignments, Robinson served as acting deputy assistant secretary of defense for health affairs, clinical and program policy and deputy chief of Navy’s Bureau of Medicine and Surgery for support operations. In 2005, Robinson assumed duties as commander, Navy Medicine National Capital Area Region. He is the 36th surgeon general of the U.S. Navy.

Horoho served previously as commander, Western Regional Medical Command; commander, Madigan Army Medical Center; commander, Walter Reed Health Care System; and commander, DeWitt Health Care Network.

TriWest Heathcare Alliance, which administers the TRICARE program for servicemembers and their families in the 21-state West Region, will sponsor the symposium luncheon.

Zeolite Solutions eases wrinkles and dry skin

Journalist | July 28, 2010

Zeolite, a powerful mineral compound, has the ability to draw out impurities, and neutralise free radical damage that age the skin. The healing properties of Zeolite have been recognised in Asian medicine for over 1,000 years for cleansing and detoxifying the skin. Zeolite acts as an antioxidant to neutralise free radical damage and inflammation which age the skin and it also helps to restore natural pH-value, balancing acid and irritated skin conditions.

Zeolite Solutions has combined zeolite with an array of nutrient- rich natural ingredients to make a range of creams that renew skin, making it supple, soft, radiant and nourished.

Activated zeolite is a natural and safe mineral product taken from volcanic rock, processed and ground into tiny particles in a patented micronisation procedure used in the production of the Zeolite Solutions. The micronisation process enables superior absorption of the specially selected natural ingredients, allowing them to reach the cutaneous tissue.

The many healing properties of Zeolite include:
It stimulates metabolism in the skin tissues;
It restores natural production of collagen;
It stimulates cell renewal;
It softens wrinkles;
It helps to regulate oxygen flow;
It mops up toxins such as heavy metals;
Its antioxidants combat free radicals that lead to premature ageing, increasing wellbeing and immunity.

It takes millions of years for the naturally occurring crystalline minerals to be formed when volcanic ash is submerged in the sea, or in freshwater lakes. Nancy Silverstein, founder of The Really Healthy Company, that sells Zeolite Solutions, describes Zeolite as the beauty mineral of the future.

Wrinkles and dry skin occur when collagen and elasticity of the skin break down, due to insufficient moisture in the skin. This is a direct result of a lack of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, essential fats and proteins. Zeolite Solutions face and body creams put back all these nutrients to make skin look and feel moist and rejuvenated.

According to medical herbalist, Nicola Bradbury, who practises on the Isle of Skye, I recommend and use Zeolite Solutions creams. I find the facial creams fade out lines and creases. They keep skin nice and supple, not dry from the winds on Skye, and they are easily absorbed, not sticky.

Zeolite Solutions Hydrating Body Lotion is easily absorbed all over, leaving skin radiant, soft, and smooth, without an oily residue. It is particularly effective on patches of dry skin, and contains:
Almond oil, rich in vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids which nourish and protect the skin and prevent wrinkles
Flaxseed, an abundant source of Omega 3s which are very anti-inflammatory
Seaweed, rich in minerals and vitamins, and with cleansing and detoxifying properties
Kudzu, a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory
Rosemary, a potent antioxidant with natural regenerative properties
Ylang ylang, cleansing and antibacterial, and soothes problem skin.
Zeolite Solutions Hydrating Body Lotion costs 19.95 for a 200ml bottle.

Zeolite Solutions Rejuvenating Cream helps to regenerate skin damage and is designed for over 30 year olds. It can be applied around the eyes, on eyelids and on the neck and cleavage at night time. It contains a combination of ingredients as well as micronized zeolite:
Almond oil, rich in vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids, protecting and nourishing the skin.
Spirulina extract, supports natural collagen and elastin, the protein that provides elasticity in the skin and discourages wrinkles
Wild rose oil, a good source of essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals, that help to regenerate and slow premature ageing of the skin.
Seaweed, cleansing and detoxifying and improves quality of skin.
Comfrey root, has powerful skin healing properties.
Zeolite Solutions Rejuvenating Cream costs 23.95 for a 20ml jar.

Zeolite Solutions Hydrating Day Cream contributes to healthy, moist and young looking skin while positively affecting its pH balance and protecting it from environmental influences. It is a perfect base for make up and can be applied around the eyes, on eyelids, face and neck. It contains micronised zeolite and:
Seaweed, improves skin quality and detoxifies and nourishes the skin
Marigold or calendula, soothes and softens skin
St Johns Wort, also known as Hypericum, heals inflamed and sore skin
Jasmine, which has a wide range of healing properties.
Zeolite Solutions Hydrating Day Cream costs 23.95 for 50ml.

All products in the Zeolite Solutions range contain no harsh preservatives, parabens, synthetic fragrances, or artificial colours and they are not tested on animals.

Zeolite Solutions products are available from The Really Healthy Company.

Cucumber Seed Oil makes a brilliant additive to skin and naturally curly hair care products

Journalist | July 28, 2010

Its no secret that cucumbers are an incredibly healthy addition to any balanced diet, clear out your intestines and best of all, taste deliciously refreshing. But, did you know that you dont have to eat cucumbers to get the best out of it, for your skin and body?

Extracting the seeds from the cucumber, drying and steaming them, creates a Cucumber Seed Oil that makes a brilliant additive to many skin and naturally curly hair care products.

But why are they so utterly good? Its because cucumbers are full of lots of nutritious goodies, of course. The yummy hidden treats in cucumbers include:
Vitamin C
Antioxidants
Anti-inflammatory properties
Potassium
Silica
Magnesium
Fluorine
Sodium
Chlorine

All mixed together, these natural properties work at reviving your natural beauty, in both your skin and your natural hair.

Any girl knows that putting cucumbers on your eyes is a brilliant way of reducing puffiness (bags) and dark circles around the eyes. This is due to the way that cucumber prevents water retention, is full of vital vitamin C and antioxidants that keep our skin silky smooth, whilst protecting it from conditions that mean our skin needs extra moisture; illnesses, sun burn, dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis.

Cucumber Seed Oil works even better against sun burn and redness, due to its anti-inflammatory properties, that works hard to soothe discomfort, caused by sun, where the skin desperately needs moisture. The anti-inflammatory properties also work well at reducing spots, pimples and blackheads from all areas of your skin.

Cucumbers are also a natural source of silica, which works at ensuring that our skin and complexion looks healthy, bright, glowing and rejuvenated, and repairing skin cells, whilst minimising the signs of age spots.

Silica is also a key to keeping naturally curly hair healthy, by strengthening and encouraging the growth of new hair. Whilst also restoring hairs elasticity, reducing the chances of hair breakage, caused by the usual extremes in life, such as stress, pollution and chlorinated water that can actually damage natural hair growth.

Cucumber Seed Oil also helps ensure elasticity, thanks to the huge amount of Phytosterols that strengthen the skins lipid barrier, making sure that your skin gets just the right balance of moisture.

So, ultimately, cucumber seed oil infused skin and naturally curly hair care products will make your skin beautiful, and your hair so healthy that everyone will be desperate to know your beauty secrets.

Many Knee And Hip Replacement Patients Experience Weight Decrease After Surgery

MedExpert | July 27, 2010

 0 posts

A Mount Sinai School of Medicine study has found that patients often exhibit a significant decrease in weight and body mass index (BMI) after undergoing knee or hip replacement surgery (arthroplasty). The study is the first of its type to correct for the annual increase in BMI typically found in North Americans between the ages of 29 to 73 years. The study was recently published in Orthopedics.

A total of 196 Mount Sinai patients who had knee or hip replacement from 2005 – 2007 to treat osteoarthritis were randomly selected for the study. Mean patient age at surgery was 67.56 years, with about 65 percent female and 35 percent male. Of this group, 19.9 percent demonstrated a clinically significant decrease in weight (defined as the loss of five percent or more of body weight) and BMI following knee or hip replacement. In addition, the mean weight of the group dropped from 79.59 kg (175.47 lbs) to 78.13 kg (172.24 lbs) after surgery.

Significant BMI decrease was found to be greater in knee replacement patients (21.5 percent) than hip replacement patients (16.9 percent). Patients who were obese prior to surgery, with BMI greater than 30, were the most likely to experience significant post-surgery weight reductions.

“Total joint arthroplasties are performed with the intent of relieving a patient’s pain and disability,” said the study’s lead author Michael Bronson, MD, Chief of Joint Replacement Surgery at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. “Both total knee patients and total hip patients experienced a statistically significant and clinically significant corrected weight loss following surgery, which indicates a healthier overall lifestyle.”

The incidence of overweight and obese adults has been steadily increasing over the past five decades in the U.S. Lifestyle modification, consisting of changes in patterns of dietary intake, exercise, and other behaviors, is considered the cornerstone of overweight and obesity management. Overweight patients often argue that their osteoarthritis limits their mobility and ability to exercise. Thus, patients may feel frustrated that they are unable to lose weight, and are often hopeful that losing weight would be easier postoperatively.

These results suggest that patients have improved weight parameters when compared to North American adults. Dr. Bronson and his joint replacement team at Mount Sinai believe that additional studies of total knee and total hip arthroplasty postoperative patients, which also incorporate nutritional guidance and long-term fitness goals, may show even more encouraging results.

Essential Care’s aromatherapy and herbal medicine products are compatible with the most sensitive skin

Journalist | July 27, 2010

With over 60 different products, including shampoos, facial moisturisers, lipbalms, sun protection and baby products, Essential Cares signature fusion of aromatherapy and herbal medicine has made them an award-winning company.

Their affordable products, suitable for the whole family are based on organic herbs, antioxidant-rich plant oils and other phytobotanicals that are both compatible with the most sensitive skin and offer excellent results.

Based in Suffolk, Essential Care is a family business founded by Margaret Weeds and her daughter Abi. When Margaret left school in the 1960s she approached Boots for a job as a trainee cosmetic chemist. She was told that there was no future in such a career and so pursued other things, including her passion for natural medicine. She trained in aromatherapy and herbal medicine, then motivated by the lack of products suitable for her own and her family’s sensitive & eczema-prone skin, Margaret began researching her own skincare formulations.

Shocked by the harsh chemicals and dead lifeless petroleum oils that formed the basis of most commercial preparations – and seemed to be accountable for a rising incidence of skin allergies, Margaret formulated products from scratch, using pure plant oils plus biodynamic herbs grown in her own garden. Her endeavours gathered pace, as clients and friends asked for remedies to treat various ailments, including a shampoo for scalp psoriasis. This led to the birth of Gentle Herb Shampoo which was the first ever organically certified shampoo in the world.

The Essential Care Ethos
To avoid artificial preservatives or fragrances, petrochemicals, sulphates or any other potentially unhealthy ingredients
To not use alcohol so as to avoid strong odours and potential drying of the skin
To use only the highest quality organic herbs and essential oils in therapeutic concentrations for optimum benefit
Plant oils must be organic to avoid pesticide contamination, and also virgin and cold-pressed, so that they have their full antioxidant vitamin-content intact to actively nourish the skin and protect it from premature ageing
To protect the vitality of our precious bioactive ingredients we use opaque white containers, rather than clear packaging which risks damage to the ingredients from light and oxidation.

Essential Care for the environment
An active commitment to the care of the environment which includes supporting organic farming methods, widely acknowledged to cause lower pollution from sprays, produce less carbon dioxide & dangerous wastes and benefit wildlife
Choose raw materials which are locally-sourced where possible, are from sustainable and renewable resources, and are either recycled or can be recycled safely. Almost all of our packaging is made in the UK in order to minimise air miles
All Essential Care products are suitable for vegetarians and many are suitable for vegans. In 2006, we won an RSPCA award for our commitment to animal welfare

Prices range from 4.50 to 19.95

Water-based liquid gel soothes and repairs skin exposed to the sun and the wind

Journalist | July 27, 2010

People are not just at risk of damaging their skin when sunbathing. The most common ways for peoples skin to become dehydrated are after sunbathing (40%), when gardening (37%), watching an event (27%) or working outdoors (25%).(1)

Exposure to the elements dehydrates skin, leaving skin dry and damaged. AfterSun/Sea/Sport offers a new approach to daily skin protection – physically stimulating the bodys natural healing system.

AfterSun/Sea/Sport is a water-based liquid gel designed for everyday use which provides a long lasting cooling and moisturising effect, specially designed to soothe and repair skin exposed to the sun and the wind.

The treatment, which is supported by clinical research, rehydrates skin through osmotic action, drawing water to the surface from within – restoring the natural defence barrier, reducing the chances of premature aging and decreasing the risk of peeling from sun exposure.

Beauty and skin care expert, Ariane Poole said: Being outdoors is great for our well being but means our skin is exposed to the elements and it doesnt take long before the effects of the sun and the wind take their toll on our skin. People should treat their skin from the impact of the elements on a daily basis by using a hydrating treatment like AfterSun/Sea/Sport to soothe and repair the skin conventional products that simply moisturise are simply not enough.

AfterSun/Sea/Sport, priced at 5.99 for 150ml, is an odourless, non sticky active hydrogel that is rapidly absorbed and acts quickly on the skin.

The range also includes AfterBURN Sunburn Rescue Gel priced at 9.99 for 75g, which is a product for skin damaged by overexposure to the sun. Both products are available from Boots and pharmacies nationwide.

More Than Half Of All ACL Reconstructions Could Be Avoided

MedExpert | July 23, 2010

 0 posts

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are common injuries to the knee, primarily affecting young people who practise sport and often treated with surgical reconstruction. A research group from Lund University has now shown that 60 per cent of these operations could be avoided, without negatively affecting treatment outcomes.

The research group’s study is known as the KANON study and started in 2001. This week the group is publishing its results in the New England Journal of Medicine.

“In our study, patients with acute ACL injuries were randomly divided into two groups for treatment with rehabilitation plus early ACL reconstruction or rehabilitation alone with the possibility of a later operation if this was deemed necessary. After two years only 40 per cent of the latter group needed to have an ACL reconstruction.

“Despite the fact that many of the patients were active sportsmen and women, we found no difference between the treatment groups in terms of knee function, activity level or well-being two years after the injury. Neither did we find any difference in these respects when we compared those who were treated with rehabilitation alone with those who had an early operation”, says Richard Frobell, researcher at Lund University, Skne University Hospital and Helsingborg Hospital.

A total of 121 patients took part in the study, which was carried out in collaboration with Helsingborg Hospital and Skne University Hospital in Lund. The patients were aged between 18 and 35 and had an acute ACL injury in a previously healthy knee. Professional athletes and those who did not regularly practise sport were excluded from the study. All patients underwent extensive rehabilitation, led by experienced physiotherapists.

Sixty-two patients were selected at random to also undergo surgical reconstruction of the injured ligament within four to six weeks of the injury, and 59 patients were selected at random to initially undergo treatment with rehabilitation alone. All the operations were carried out in accordance with well established methods and by experienced surgeons. The patients were examined on several occasions over two years and gave their own opinions of the status of the injured knee.

“There are almost 10 000 scientific publications addressing the ACL and 50 per cent of these are about surgical treatment. However, none of these studies have shown that surgical reconstruction produces better results than rehabilitation alone. Despite this, we perform 3 000 cruciate ligament reconstructions a year in Sweden”, says Stefan Lohmander, professor and consultant at Lund University and Skne University Hospital. “In the USA there are 200 000 operations of this type, at a cost of USD 3 billion!”

The research group’s results have strengthened their conviction that there is no evidence to support the recommendation of ACL reconstruction as a first method of treatment.

Rehabilitation with experienced physiotherapists produces the same results as operation for more than half of the individuals in this patient group and only four out of ten need to be exposed to the risks involved in an operation.

The patients in the study will continue to be examined in order to find out whether the results are the same in the longer term and to see if there is any difference between treatments in terms of the risk of developing osteoarthritis in the knee.
