David Popham opens second hairdressing salon in Oxford

David Popham has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in hairdressing. Highlights include his apprenticeship with Vidal Sassoon in the 60′s and 70′s. David worked through the ranks at Sassoon’s to the post of Creative Director in the New York salon.
Cutting edge techniques, driven by clients’ preference, will be very much in evidence when David and Shirley Popham open their second hairdressing salon in Oxford’s Summertown district. The new salon is located in the fashionable and vibrant South Parade and will open this week with a launch party between 6pm and 9pm. Like the original Popham Salon in North Parade Avenue, the new salon is also a Sassoon Professional Partnership salon.
Objectives are to have five salons in operation over a period of five years. David says of the second launch: “Despite the UK’s deep financial recession, over the past two years we have increased sales and the salon has continued to attract an abundance of discerning clients who both value and recommend our service. The new salon will bring us welcome extra chair space to meet that demand.”
The new salon will feature Popham’s unique three-way mirror workstation allowing stylists to see as they work, in 3D. David says: “I can’t’ imagine trying to create a three dimensional work without seeing clients in the round.” Blue Orbit Design and Beauty Planet shop fitters have helped create a fresh salon design. Based on the original salon, basins will be located at bespoke workstations, which because of the generous proportions afford a feeling of privacy and personal space for the customer.
The contemporary colour scheme of raspberry and white will complement the purple hues of the original salon giving a feeling of continuity.
David will spend two days a week at the new salon cutting and styling hair. Additional staff will include: Tuc Rojas, who came to Popham from New York City and has been a pivotal member of the Popham team for the past eight years – Reagan Willimont, who was trained by David, is now a senior stylist and has been with Popham for the past five years.
David opened the first Popham Salon in 1981 and has been in partnership with his wife Shirley since 1989. The Popham’s are particularly proud of their winning service formula which sees a huge investment in its staff. David says: “The ethos of the salons is to invest in our people, so they invest in our clients. It is simply no use stipulating a tight service script if the staff are not on our side. We ensure the staff love and enjoy their work, feel appreciated and rewarded and own the Popham culture. This strategy, together with the inspirational creative and craft training of Sassoon adds up to a service beyond rival.”
