British public are in denial about their real size and will go to extreme lengths to avoid facing up to their true weight

In an effort to better understand the obesity epidemic, Salter has commissioned a survey of over 2,000 British men and women asking questions about weight and the psychological effects of being overweight. The results revealed that the British public are in denial about their real size and will go to extreme lengths to avoid facing up to their true weight. Over 41% of people polled admit to taking their clothes off before they weigh themselves, while over 30% of those polled avoid weighing themselves completely if they suspected they had put on weight.

Despite the fact that almost 59% of the people surveyed describe themselves as overweight, of these, 28.5% of people only weigh themselves every six months, making weight maintenance and monitoring difficult. Not only do we not want to know the truth of our own weight, but according to the Salter survey, over a quarter of people lie about their weight to others and 16% of us lie when asked what clothing size we take.

Despite the worrying statistics about the weight of the Nation, survey results were clear that overweight Brits do want to make a change for the better. 32% of people who describe themselves as being overweight say they would like to lose weight so that they can have a better figure and feel more attractive, while 52.8% of people admit to holding on to their ‘slim clothes’ in the hope they’ll lose weight.

With a range of advanced analyser scales and housewares for a healthy lifestyle, Salter products give a complete view of health and weight beyond the sometimes-scary number on the bathroom scale. Analysing body fat, percentage water, percentage muscle mass, visceral fat, BMI and BMR, the Salter range of precision scales can help monitor weight-loss progress and evaluate health indicators, helping to simplify a slimming routine, and give the 32% of dieters seeking a change the support they need.

Salter will celebrate 250 years of precision technology in 2010. Providing bathroom scales to the masses throughout the years of feast and famine, Salter scales have accommodated fluctuations in the populations body size over the last 250 years, innovating new products to fit the lifestyles and girths of the expanding British population.
