The key to achieving a full yet striking brow is to focus on the arch

Take inspiration from the catwalk shows, designers get creative with the models’ eyebrows; girls stalk the catwalk at shows from Alexander Wang to Chlo with everything from bleached to painted, to jewel encrusted eyebrows. Diamante brows may work when applied to runway cool, but mere mortals who want to join in the brow crusade should stick to au naturel – in the literal sense. 2011 is shaping up to be all about the brow.

Ritu Patel brow queen and MALIKA guru to the A-list says that when it comes to eyebrow shaping it is best to ignore the trends and focus on what looks best on you! “Trends come and go but whether sleek or thick, the secret is not to fight nature and to make the best of your natural shape!”

One trend that does translate from catwalk to reality is the full, natural brow – think Brooke Shields and Keira Knightley. MALIKA says “For the young face, a thicker brow is more striking, and will sharpen your features; whereas for the more mature face a defined, manicured eyebrow gives a younger look.”

How to get the look? Very easy! Tame full brows with an eyebrow gel or if your brows are uneven and savaged by years of over-plucking, fill them in with an eyebrow pencil blending the colours to find a shade that matches your natural hair.

Note – growing out over plucked eyebrows can take months and on some occasions the hair never fully grows back. Patel says, “Stop and think before you pluck, eyebrows are not a fashion accessory but a part of you that needs to be maintained. Plucking brows into scraggly caterpillars will ruin your face and natural beauty!” A great trick is rubbing in castor oil and olive oil which helps to stimulate hair growth.

Another catwalk favourite but a reality no-no is the straight brow. MALIKA observes: “Unless you look like a supermodel and are part of the fashion crowd, straight brows look awful! They make your eyes appear smaller and can look very masculine.” Instead, MALIKA recommends going for an immaculate brow as seen at Giambattista Valli. “The key to achieving a full yet striking brow is to focus on the arch – maintaining your natural shape and plucking away only the hair beneath and between the brows.” Remove a little hair at a time to ensure that your brows stay even – wonky eyebrows are so last season!

If in doubt, ask a professional for help. Book an appointment at a MALIKA to find out exactly what suits you and get some tips on how to create and maintain a flattering shape.
