Works with Water Nutraceuticals’ help clear skin MEN keeps spots and blemishes at bay

| July 8, 2011

To help men regain control over their skin, Works with Water Nutraceuticals has launched help: clear skin MEN, a health supplement with 100% natural ingredients clinically proven to reduce the appearance of spots and blemishes within six weeks.

Although we all get the odd pimple from time to time, when every day is a bad skin day, it can affect a person’s confidence and sense of well-being. Acne affects a quarter of all men at some point in their adult lives.

help: clear skin MEN is easy to implement into your daily routine. Take a sachet of help: clear skin MEN twice a day – just add it to your favourite drink – for a minimum of six weeks for best possible results to help clear spots and acne. The powder dissolves in water and other non-carbonated beverages, without altering the taste or texture.

help: clear skin MEN contains 100% natural ingredients including Praventin – a bioactive protein extracted from milk using advanced scientific methods – which is rich in Lactoferrin, known to reduce the development of bacteria responsible for many skin impurities. In addition, it also helps to prevent blemishes and spots forming due to its antimicrobial effect.

Praventin is a natural ingredient derived from milk, which has been proven to help people achieve a clearer complexion by enhancing the body’s natural defences. It limits the growth of acne bacteria, reduces the blemishes associated with acne and assists in the repair of damaged skin cells caused by blemishes.

Although Praventin can be found in milk, the beneficial skin clearing effect is only activated when this bioactive protein is extracted from the milk. This means that drinking litres of milk is not going to deliver the same benefit. So the solution is to simply take a sachet of help: clear skin MEN twice a day to get the required measured dosage of Lactoferrin to help clear spots and acne.

In addition to Praventin, help: clear skin MEN contains:
* Aloe Vera: a high extract of this healing plant has a smoothing and nourishing effect on the skin
* Oligofructose: a natural source of soluble fibre. Increasing fibre intake prevents your body from expelling toxics that affect the skin and help avert acne

help: clear skin MEN is available from selected GNC stores nationwide and online , priced at 9.99.

Beauty tips for teenagers

| May 20, 2011

Young girls are not only keener than ever to learn the secrets to looking naturally gorgeous but to actually understanding good skin care. Over the last three years Cannelle reports they have seen a 54% increase in the number of teenagers visiting their salons with the majority opting for manicures, waxing and eyebrow shaping treatments.

Cannelle offers a wide range of suitable treatments including Dcleor facials for spot prone skin which use 100% pure essential oils with natural plant extracts. For teenagers Aroma Purify is great for oily skin or Aroma Radiance for duller skin.

“Recent years have seen an overwhelming pressure for young girls to ply on heavy amounts of make-up but now we are seeing more girls who are being brought to the salon by their mother’s to learn how to look after their skin and to learn how to put on make-up for a natural look. We also find this generation is far more savvy about sun exposure,” says France Baudet the owner of the renowned French beauty salon.

France continues: “The teenagers who come to our salon are made to feel as comfortable as possible and learn a lot from our experienced beauty therapists. With exam time and then end of year balls coming up we are expecting to see even more girls coming in for a treat, to reduce the effects that stress has had on their skin and to relax.”

Cannelle delivers a fusion of beauty treatments all of which are tailored to meet their clients’ special requirements. Baudet has divulged some top beauty tips for teenagers.

CANNELLE TEENAGE BEAUTY TIPS

1. Cleanse, tone AND MOISTURISE! – Even if you have oily skin! Many girls avoid moisturisers because they believe they contain oils which promote spots. In fact if you choose a moisturiser that contains ‘purifying oils’ you will reap the benefits of well-nourished skin without spot problems. I recommend Dcleor Aroma Purete for combination skin or Dcleor Hydra Floral for normal skin.

2. Make up remover wipes are handy, particularly for girls on the go! So take them on sleepovers for quick, mess-free make up removal but avoid using them for prolonged periods. Wipes do not replace a proper skin care regime…think mouth wash as an alternative to brushing teeth. Exactly, you wouldn’t!

3. Lip gloss compliments young, fresh skin perfectly. Don’t be tempted to try dark or bright red matt lipsticks…you did that when you played dressing up as mum ten years ago…you don’t want the same effect now! Vaseline has the same light reflecting instant plumping effect for even the thinnest lips so keep a travel size handy and reapply, reapply, reapply!

4. UV rays are a big no! Your generation is far more savvy about UV rays and burning. Sun exposure causes premature ageing and wrinkles can develop even in the early 20s with too much sun. Thankfully pale, pasty skin is a thing of the past for teens now the shelves are bursting with easy-to-use, skin nourishing creams and daily moisturisers containing hints of tanning colour that allow a safe, healthy glow to develop with continual use.

5. If you are particularly sensitive about the size of your nose, summer is the best time of the year for you! Trendy sunglasses and large brimmed hats look fabulous (teamed with skinny jeans and flip flops) and will dramatically reduce appearance of a larger nose. Uber stylish, uber clever!

6. Sparse lashes? Zig-zag your mascara brush! Whatever brand of mascara you choose it’s the application that gives thicker longer looking lashes. Start at the base of the lashes (brush under not over lashes) and keeping the brush in contact with lashes at all times, zig-zag from side to side as you move up the lash. This movement separates and coats each lash at the same time, for maximum coverage and instantly thicker, bolder lashes.

7. Everyone has sad skin days. The moment you notice an obvious spot, cover with a medicated concealer and re-style your hair! Our attention usually goes straight to what’s new, so all focus will be on your hair not on your blemish! Alternatively MAC, Couleur Caramel and STILA have great concealers.

SQOOM improves the appearance of British men’s skin

| May 16, 2011

SQOOM, an innovative German skin treatment system, is the latest gadget to reach the UK is set to improve the appearance of British mens skin. By investing just a few minutes a day, mens skin will soon look brighter, tighter and more radiant than it has in years!

Using a handheld sonic device, SQOOM delivers specially developed and highly effective gels deep into the skin. The device uses a mix of ultrasound and ionisation to massage the deeper layers of the skin in order to activate muscular tissue and trigger regeneration and elasticity.

Three SQOOM antiAge gels: xcential hyaGel, DeSpot gel and cleanser gel are available alongside a range of SQOOM med gels to treat specific skin problems. These gels are applied to the skin as part of a specially designed regime and the xcential hyaGel is ideal for use after shaving. The natural ingredients in the gel refresh the skin; aloe vera reduces redness and the pure alcohol content acts as a disinfectant for the upper layers.

For anyone suffering with sports injuries, tight muscles or sprains, there is the OL medGel which treats joint and muscle pain with a natural analgesic. NA medGel can be used to treat scarring, including keloid scars; AK has been forumlated to treat acne on the face and body and gel PS calms dry, flaky skin, including psoriasis. If men suffer from very dry skin, there is SQOOM medGel NE which can either be used on its own or can be mixed with the xcential hyaGel for the ultimate dry skin treatment.

Commenting on the use of SQOOM by men, creator Helmut Schick says: Mens skin is stronger than womens skin so many skincare products hardly touch the surface. SQOOM works because it gets into the deeper layers of the skin, where the cells are formed and before the skin toughens up. It takes slightly longer for men to notice an effect with SQOOM, but the end results are significant. Mens skin often reacts badly to stress but by using SQOOM on a regular basis, the negative effects of stress, the urban environment and pollution are removed, and over time, wrinkles and lines are reduced.

The SQOOM handheld sonic device is available in silver or black and costs from 529 for a set including one xcential hyaGel and one cleanserGel. Other sets with different gel configurations are available. Additional gels can be purchased in the store: All gels in the SQOOM med range plus the DeSpot Gel and xcential hyaGel are priced at 79 each and cleanserGel is 17.
A luxury device decorated with Swarovski crystals is also available exclusively at Harrods for 1098 including one xcential hyaGel and one cleanserGel. The medGel set is available in Harrods Pharmacy only.

The antiAge gels are available in the beauty department and online at Harrods.

The handheld device is designed to European electrical standards and is equipped with a titanium transducer and longlife battery.

Mature skin beauty tips

| May 12, 2011

Cannelle is a small collection of beauty salons delivering a fusion of beauty treatments in French style, launched as an exclusive franchise in selected areas across the UK. With over 25% of Cannelle’s clientele over the age of 50, France Baudet, owner of Cannelle Beauty salons argues there is no need for facelifts as mature women are better at looking after their skin than ever, in particular favouring full anti-ageing facials, eye treatments and eyebrow shaping. In addition there is an increase of 10% of men over the age of 50 visiting Cannelle in the last two years, but conversely they are choosing treatments such as back massages and chest waxing.

France Baudet says: “You can easily tell when a woman has looked after her skin for years but that is not to say if you are a late starter that it is too late! There are a huge number of treatments and products on the market that keeps your skin supple, healthy and glowing as a mature woman. The real tell-tale areas are of course around your eyes, neck and hands. The same goes for men although of course focused skin care is a comparatively new thing for most men.”

A favourite treatment with immediate and dramatic anti-ageing results offered at Cannelle, is the CACI Ultimate which is an effective non-surgical treatment which redefines facial contours, plumps out deep lines and wrinkles, as well as tackles a range of skin imperfections combining micro-current facial toning, crystal free microdermabrasion and LED photo rejuvenation.

France Baudet’s mature skin beauty tips are:

1. Avoid ‘setting’ makeup with too much loose powder. It will settle into fine lines and pores and is appears ageing. Instead apply a good primer before applying any makeup and your makeup will last all day without the need for loose powder. I recommend Couleur Caramel white and apricot primer creams.

2. Bright chiffon and silk scarfs are back which is good news for those of us who feel our neck and dcollet reveals a more mature age than we would like! Whether dressed for the office or casual weekend wear, a small silk scarf tied loosely at the neck is bang on trend and takes years off! 2011 spring colours are green- based with pink and blues featuring prominently.

3. As we age our eyebrows get sparser. Use a soft eyebrow pencil or carefully applied eye shadow to thicken eyebrows and frame your eyes beautifully. Always choose a colour that matches your hair colour – nothing too dark or severe.

4. Change your moisturiser regularly. As we mature our skin can take longer to hydrate and becomes immune to products if used year in year out. Each season change the moisturiser you use to adapt to the changes in weather and keep skin happy and hydrated all year round.

5. Avoid glitter and anything overtly shimmery when choosing makeup and clothes. Remember, it is not about looking younger, it is about confidence and your own beauty.

6. Use a rich hand cream with SPF all year. The skin on our hands is continually exposed to elements and reveals an age we may want to hide… invest in regular manicures also to ensure healthy nails and skin.

7. The only way to see the full benefits of beauty routine is to keep it regimented! By continually taking care of your skin, you will reap the benefits in the long run.

8. Anti-ageing creams are only effective if they suit your skin type. Rather than choosing one based on your age, choose it on what your skin needs from a cream.

Pampered skin for you and your baby with Shea Mooti’s ethically sourced skincare

| April 11, 2011

Shea Mooti use Shea butter in all their products; an emollient that, in its pure form, is unsurpassed in maintaining and protecting delicate skin. Their shea butter is ethically sourced from AfriKids’ Daughters, a multi-cooperative in rural northern Ghana. This self-titled women’s collective has been empowered by local charity, AfriKids, to secure a bright future for their families through dignified income generation.

Shea Mooti has just launched its new range of natural and ethically sourced skincare designed for mothers-to-be and their precious bundles. The range includes stretch mark oil, body balm, foot cream and organic soaps. Shea Mooti products contain no artificial ingredients and are lovingly prepared using only pure, botanical oils and butters hand picked for their quality and beneficial skin care properties.

Shea Mooti founder Violet Reid said: “We are extremely excited to have created a brand for mamas and mamas to be that we can confidently say is made from ethically sourced ingredients that are natural, pure and of the highest quality. Shea Mooti products will provide you with the best possible result – naturally gorgeous, pampered skin for you and your beautiful baby!”

The Shea Mooti ‘Mama to Be’ product range includes:

Mama’s Everything Body Balm – the most versatile product in the range. Our nutritious balm can be used to soothe and moisturise the bump, bottom, udders, lips, knees and even heels.

Mama’s Belly Rub Stretch Mark Oil – for those super stretching months to come.

Mama’s Soothing Leg and Foot Cream – therapy for those hard working legs carrying a heavy load.

Handcrafted Organic Soap – made with Fair Trade oils and ethically sourced Shea Butter to enrich and soften skin.

Looking to the future, Violet hopes to expand her ethical skincare range, introducing a wider choice of baby products with the aim of continuing the special journey travelled by a mother and her baby.

Violet explains: “The idea of making natural skincare was conceived after the birth of my son Alex (who is now 5 years old). He had very dry skin, cradle cap and was prone to eczema. Like all good mothers, and having a nursing background, I hurried to have him examined by the doctor who prescribed steroid creams and treatment shampoos that contained harsh chemicals designed to ease the discomfort. I later realised the condition would be ongoing and the creams would offer only temporary relief. I tried using many other ‘organic and natural’ labelled baby skin products on the market but they only exacerbated his poor skin condition. So the journey in search of a solution began.”

“I realised that the only way to be certain that the creams and body wash I was using on my baby were natural, pure and did not contain anything nasty was to make them myself. After intensive research I enrolled into a natural soap making course and later a course on making creams and potions. I was totally addicted! The one most important ingredient I discovered along the way was Shea Butter.”

“This emollient in its pure form is unsurpassed by any other in maintaining and protecting delicate skin. I added Shea butter to all my formulations, which of course included the purest natural oils and ingredients, to ensure optimum efficacy – which equalled great skin. There was a marked improvement to my son’s skin and by then I was expecting my second baby so I decided to make some oils and body butters for me and the new arrival.”

Probiotics cleanse deep into pores whilst retaining the skin’s natural balance

| March 31, 2011

Women nationwide seek new, chemical free ways to maintain healthy skin and avoid the wrath of ageing. Using the concept of bugs to boost complexion, Probiotic skincare balances the levels of microflora in the skin to keep it hydrated and nourished, as well as fight off bad bacteria to prevent irritations like acne and eczema.

Researching and then exclusively formulating a new Probiotic skincare range, Club Cleo is a huge advocate of the benefits friendly bacteria can bring. Cleansing deep into pores whilst retaining the skins natural balance, preventing moisture loss and oil build up, Probiotic skincare is a new trend thats only going to continue on its upward spiral.

Introducing its Deep Cleansing Moisture Mousse, Skin Sheer and Radiance Polish and EGF Regenerate Nourishing Crme, Club Cleos Probiotic range contains a base of pearl extract and aloe. Along with a multitude of exotic nutrient rich active plant extracts, the Moisture Mousse has a hint of green tea and liquorice, the Radiance Polish a touch of papaya and chamomile, and the Nourishing Crme a dusting of jojoba and applephenon.

The organic based range is hypoallergenic and suitable for all skin types, and Club Cleo recommends its Probiotic skincare formulas to women who want to age well and maintain their skins elasticity and luminous complexion without the sometimes-harsh consequences of using chemical based products. The Cleo Q Skin Sheer and Radiance Polish is a favourite amongst many; a new and wonderfully light way to exfoliate, unclog pores and brighten the complexion, it gently sheds dead skin cells, stabilising the skins surface without abrasion.

Janine Kay, Managing Director of Club Cleo, said: Probiotics is an area weve been researching for several years, and we were one of the first to introduce it to the UK market in 2008. There was a recent prediction that it would be the next big breakthrough in natural skincare, but there remains some scepticism around the idea. Our Probiotic skincare range is our most effective yet as it has multiple benefits and works alongside the bacteria already living in your skin. Ive been using the range everyday for the last 2 years and my skin has never looked or felt healthier.

Club Cleos Deep Cleansing Moisture Mousse and Skin Sheer and Radiance Polish are rich in natural nutrients including amino acids, peptides, probiotics and lactic acids. The unique mineral and herbal formulas promote biosynthesis of collagens, fibronectin and keratin, increasing the skins oxygen absorption to encourage healthy cell renewal. The EGF Regenerate Nourishing Crme includes platinum extract to continuously metabolise and prevent oxidisation. It accelerates regeneration of skin cells, enhancing moisture and oxygen retention, recovering elasticity and smoothing wrinkles.

Club Cleo also stocks a wide selection of natural health and beauty products including pamper packs, an intimate care range, perfumes, and health and beauty accessories. There is no animal testing in any of Club Cleos products.

Green tea has a youthful effect on the skin and keeps it refreshed, protected and detoxified

| February 23, 2011

With natural benefits that include boosting the immune system, supporting a healthy heart and promoting energy and wellness, the popularity of tea and herbal infusions is no surprise. But don’t just enjoy the benefits when drinking tea, there are many advantages to using herbal infusions in skincare also. Green tea in particular is renowned for its antioxidant properties, having a youthful effect on the skin and keeping it refreshed, protected and detoxified.

Lush Co-Founder and Product Inventor, Helen Ambrosen, says, “Green tea powder is used in cosmetics as a preservative because of its antibacterial properties. As green tea is not fermented, it retains its beneficial properties. Powdered green tea has a beautifully soft texture, which is perfect for use in a face mask. It adds to the smooth feel of our Sacred Truth fresh face mask (5.25) as it is applied to the skin. It is important that the texture of the mask does not pull or stretch the skin. Green tea also has powerful antioxidant properties and, as such, can combat the damaging impact of free radicals. As it sets on the face, its antioxidant action begins to work and cleanses thoroughly.”

Lush’s Sacred Truth fresh face mask also contains papaya which is enzymic so it dissolves dirt, grime and excess sebum, as well as removing dead skin cells. Linseeds, natural yoghurt and honey are extremely softening, moisturising and help the skin retain moisture, while shea butter, coconut oil, evening primrose oil and lanolin really plump up the skin. Ideal for mature skin, this is one mask you can use as little or as often as you like.

Other fresh face masks in the range include: nourishing Oatifix; chocolatey Cupcake; detoxing BB Seaweed and blemish busting Cosmetic Warrior. All are 5.25 for 75g and are so fresh they have to be kept in the fridge and used within 3 weeks.

Rosa Mosqueta helps treat scars, stretch marks and signs of skin aging

| February 17, 2011

Rosa Mosqueta is a densely growing shrub which is cultivated in the Andes. It is highly prized, not only for its skincare properties, but also for its perfume and it is often used in cosmetics.

The rosehips of the Rosa Mosqueta, from which the oil and Vegicaps are made, carry an extremely high concentration of Omegas 3 and 6 (Essential Fatty Acids) and also trans-retinoic acid, which is a naturally occurring compound related to Vitamin A. It is believed that the trans-retinoic acid is responsible for Rosa Mosqueta’s anti-aging properties.

Some of us dread the forthcoming warmer spring and summer months if we have noticeable scarring on our bodies. The rise in temperatures means a baring of skin and sometimes scars and lesions can cause great embarrassment.

For hundreds of years, the women of South America have used Rosa Mosqueta as a beauty oil, but scientific research has shown that the oil has a profound effect on the treatment of scars, stretch marks and signs of skin aging.

Rosa Mosqueta has been used in numerous clinical trials in Europe and the US. In one particular trial, Spanish dermatologists applied Rosa Mosquetta in a clinical setting to treat a variety of scars, including severe post-operative types. In over 90% of cases, the results were termed “very satisfactory” in the six months of use.

Rosa Mosqueta is available in Oil form and 500mg Vegicaps so you can treat your skin from inside and out.

The recommended daily dose is 3 capsules with food, and when using the oil, massage in to the affected area for 2-3 minutes up to three times each day.

Compeed cold sore patches prevent unsightly scabbing and encourage a faster healing process

| February 7, 2011

Contrary to popular belief, cold sores, which are caused by the herpes simplex virus, are not caught from cups and other personal objects, but only through intimate contact with an infected person, usually via kissing.

Cold sore outbreaks are painful, embarrassing and look very unsightly, but are also very infectious – long term sufferers dread them and become dismayed at another attack. The cycle of the cold sore is one which can last several days or even weeks with or without treatment.

The virus infection starts on the surface of the skin but moves along the nerve and remains dormant until the immune system is low, for example times of another infection such as a cold, flu or if stressed. The virus travels back up the nerve and appears as the all too familiar blisters, turning the affected skin red and weeping.

A new complimentary cold sore treatment by Compeed is used in addition to an antiviral cream or gel, and is applied directly over the cold sore as a clear patch to give relief, and reducing possible contamination by touching of the fingers. Patches also prevent the unsightly scabbing thereby encouraging a faster healing process.

As the cold sore leaves many feeling embarrassed and very self-conscious about their appearance, OTC cold sore treatments are popular and purchased at the first signs of an attack called the tingle, which refers to the sensation of sensitivity of the affected nerve. Most OTC cold sore treatments contain aciclovir, an antiviral ingredient, in a cream or gel format and are applied several times a day, usually for five days. Popular cold sore treatments of creams and gels include Zovirax, Lypsyl and Cymex.

Prevention is always better than a cure, and lots of practical things can be done. To keep the immune system healthy a varied diet high in Vitamins A, C & E are suggested alongside iron and zinc, which if lacking could be taken in supplement form to help support the immune system. Lifestyle is important and managing stress can prevent outbreaks along with limiting the intake of alcohol and cigarettes.

Many cold sore outbreaks happen in the summer as well as in the winter, because the sun is a contributing factor due to its UV rays penetrating the skin. To prevent drawing the virus from the nerve, the skin needs sun protection, so wearing sunscreen and lip balms which include UV protection are a must, but be sure to check all labels carefully. Hormones can also cause outbreaks and for women around the time of a period the risk can be higher, and for women going through the perimenopause this can also occur due to the hormonal imbalance.

Compeed patches and cold sore treatments relief including creams, gels and patches are available from Chemist.net a leading UK internet pharmacy and Royal Pharmaceutical Society registered chemist.

Varama skin camouflage cream can be blended to match any skin tone

| January 24, 2011

In the UK there are approximately 1.3 million people (about one in every 45 people) who have visible scarring or a skin irregularity on their bodies; for over half a million of these people (one in every 111), the marking is on their face.

For some, these differences – whether large or small – can cause self-consciousness. If a child is being singled out, teased or bullied because they look different they may find it particularly hard to cope. Part of that coping strategy can be to cover the mark with skin camouflage (also known as cover cream) which can provide immediate change, disguising marks on any part of the body.

Unlike conventional make-up skin camouflage is highly durable, waterproof, is suitable for all skin types and can be used on a variety of skin conditions including port wine stains (birthmarks), eczema, acne and scarring. It is suitable for children and adults.

Skin camouflage expert Vanessa Jane Davies has recently launched a new skin camouflage cream called Varama which can be blended to match any skin tone and adjusted should the marking change colour. The Varama website also provides useful information on what conditions skin camouflage can be used on and how to select and blend the creams.

What if your child has a birthmark or blemish that they want to keep covered up? If they’re at a sensitive age even a freckle can make them feel self-conscious. Varama could help children feel more comfortable and help if their skin condition, blemish or scar causes bullying.

Vanessa Jane Davies is the creator of Varama and advises children how they can cover up with skin camouflage Varama if they wish and how parents can help their children if they feel self conscious or unhappy about a visible difference on their face or body.

Look radiant during the cold winter months

| December 28, 2010

Cold outside, warm and dry inside. It’s a recipe for skin disaster. Keeping your skin in prime condition can be a challenge at any time of the year, but particularly in winter when, not only are conditions more extreme, but your skin is also facing sudden changes in temperature.

Helen Ambrosen, Lush Product Creator & Co-Founder, recommends keeping skin gently stimulated in order to maintain a healthy circulation at this time of the year. “The face has millions of tiny nerve endings, which react to extremes in temperature. By keeping skin stimulated you’ll encourage the elimination of toxins, ensure a healthy turnover of cells and stimulate muscle tone. This will combat the drying effects of cold and central heating. You’ll also find that skin tone improves and you’re less likely to look blue with the cold!”

Here are a few additional tips for winter survival – to help overcome some of the most common skin problems and keep winter ailments at bay.

DRY
Lush moisturisers have been deliberately formulated to not only put much needed moisture into skin, but also have humectant properties to help the skin maintain its water balance. They also make the skin feel comfortable. Emolliency is really important in winter as it helps stop skin losing moisture. The moisturisers contain organic cold pressed vegetable oils as well vegetable butters.

Lush’s Skin’s Shangri La moisturiser (25.50 for 45g) is fantastic in winter, deeply softening and protecting against the elements. Rich, but light in texture, it is a rejuvenating and remineralising cream that leaves the skin feeling soft and plumped up. It has a multitude of cold-pressed, organic, supremely nutritious oils and butters, plus antioxidant wheatgrass and toothed wrack seaweed to protect the skin from free radicals.

Hands can often be left feeling dry and itchy in cooler temperatures. Smitten hand cream (6.10 for 100g) is rich in moisturising and emollient cold pressed organic natural oils, including wheatgerm and avocado, together with almond oil. It’s easily absorbed and soothing, leaving hands deliciously almond scented. And to help keep feet soft, supple and hard skin free, Fair Trade Foot Lotion (7.95 for 225g) is a richly emollient cream with Fairtrade certification for the organic cocoa butter used. This foot cream not only benefits you, but also the farmers being paid a fair wage for their produce.

CHAPPED
For soothing sore, chapped skin wherever it may be on the body, Lush’s Ultrabalm (7.50 for 40g) is our eco-friendly version of Vaseline, without the petroleum jelly but with a super softening, emollient base of rose wax, candelilla wax and jojoba oil instead. Perfect for any skin type, this multi-purpose balm can also be used as a lip balm; to alleviate any dry skin; as a cuticle softener; to shape brows into place; to banish hard skin on heels and elbows; or to soothe windblown noses. Be sure to have one with you at all times for any necessity.

Not forgetting your lips, one of the most delicate and sensitive areas on your body and susceptible to the elements. Sweet Lips lip scrub (4.50 for 25g) is a sugary sweet, chocolate and vanilla scrub that smoothes winter lips, leaving them tasting of Crme Brule but without the calorific intake! Not only does it taste incredible, it’s also a winter must have – containing scrubby Fairtrade sugar to exfoliate away any dry, flakey skin, along with organic jojoba oil to nourish, soften and keep silky smooth. Once you’ve exfoliated lips with Sweet Lips, smother them with some Lip Service (4.75 for 10g). A Fair Trade cocoa butter, shea butter, olive oil and kernel oil infused balm that is softening and healing for cracked lips.

PROBLEM SKIN
Constant changes in temperature can cause the skin to over compensate making an imbalance in the production of sebum, which can then lead to breakouts. According to Helen, “Never use anything that leaves your skin thirsty. If it feels sore or taught after using a product, stop using it. What the skin misses in winter is emolliency to help stop it losing moisture and keep it soft.

Lush’s Ultrabland (5.75 for 45g and 9.25 for 100g) is excellent for all skin types and is a wonderfully gentle deep cleanser that softens and helps keep moisture in.”

Follow cleansing with a facemask… Cupcake (4.95 for 75g), which contains rhassoul mud, is exceptionally deep cleansing, is a powerful antiseptic and also has antimicrobial properties making it ideal for problem skins or breakouts that can occur at any age. Rhassoul clay also absorbs excess sebum lifting off any dry, or scaly skin flakes. Lush has also added glycerine and Fair Trade cocoa butter to soften the skin and help reduce moisture loss.

DULL
Regular exfoliation is the most important step in a beauty routine to keep skin stimulated and working at its peak. It also gives skin a brightening boost as the natural glow of the healthy skin cells can be blocked underneath by the excess dead skin. Helen says, “Make sure your chosen product is a blend of exfoliators but also just as importantly a blend of skin softeners. When you get those two things together that’s when you get the best effect.”

Helen Ambrosen recommends: Ocean Salt (6.10 for 120g or 11.20 for 250g) … a stimulating foaming facial wash with a vigorous polishing action. Formulated with fresh lemon, lime and grapefruit infusion to brighten up skin, along with seaweed and granules of sea salt, which as well as stimulating the skin and removing dead surface cells, also contain minerals that are beneficial to the skin. Fresh avocado moisturises and softens, while violet leaf absolute calms and nurtures. Follow this with The Sacred Truth facemask (4.95 for 75g)… your ticket to a revived, vibrant complexion! The vital antioxidant action of wheatgrass, ginseng and green tea, cleansing clays and nutritious butters, all combine to defend the skin. Papaya will cleanse and refresh and you’ll look visibly radiant. This mask delivers live, fresh, active ingredients, which enhance and revive the complexion.

WEARY & TIRED
Have a soak with one of Lush’s Avobath Bath Ballistics (2.90 each)… a moisture treat containing olive oil and fresh avocados rich in unsaturated oils, to hydrate, nourish and soften the skin. Olive oil is a refined vegetable oil, containing anti-oxidents, so extremely good for the skin. The Lemongrass oil is stimulating and energising – ideal when you’re flagging and in need of a recharge.

Then smother yourself in Sympathy for the Skin (9.70 for 240g pot), a soothing, calming, richly moisturising body treatment for when winter has done you in. Contains vitamin-rich, emollient bananas, calming vanilla and two of Lush’s most widely used skin softeners – almond oil and cocoa butter. The calming and soothing benefits are enhanced by the blend of labdanam, sandalwood and lemon oil.

NEED A LITTLE SOMETHING EXTRA?
Skin toners are effective and designed to make your skin feel smooth and flexible, but they also remove leftover cleanser and deliver essential oils to your skin’s surface, according to your needs. Lush toners are alcohol-free and made with essential oil waters as an extra way to make your skin feel and look better.

Sitting indoors by the fire and heaters may keep us warm in the depths of winter, but it dehydrates our skin in the process. A Breath of Fresh Air (3.25 for 100g / 6.35 for 250g) is made of nutritious gifts from the sea. Sea water is revitalising and beautiful for dry, tired skin and Irish moss seaweed gives skin back the moisture it needs.

Oats can treat conditions like eczema and dry skin

| December 27, 2010

Hailed as the perfect breakfast by nutritionists, oats are high in fibre and protein and also help to lower cholesterol. But don’t just get your oats at breakfast time – oats are also exceptional to use on the skin; they’re nourishing, cleansing, softening and extremely calming on irritations.

An especially good choice for winter is Lush’s Oatifix fresh facemask (4.95 for 75g), that’s crammed full of nourishing oatmeal. Oats are often used to treat conditions like eczema and dry skin, as when applied externally they draw toxins from inflammations and ease itchiness – their starchiness helps the skin absorb moisture, so perfect for keeping it soft and supple during the cold winter months, which can leave skin dry, sore and chapped.

Oatifix also contains ground almonds to gently exfoliate and mashed bananas to soften. Bananas are a powerhouse of nutrition and a great emollient, helping to lock in moisture to the skin – essential during winter. Illipe butter is added to help reduce redness, again ideal for keeping you looking beautiful against the elements.

Other fresh facemasks in the range include: anti-ageing Sacred Truth; chocolatey Cupcake; detoxing BB Seaweed; and blemish busting Cosmetic Warrior. All are 4.95 for 75g and are so fresh they have to be kept in the fridge and used within 3 weeks. All contain kaolin, which is a tightening clay so will help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles … the perfect way to help your skin deal with the barrage of late nights and excessive behaviour the party season is sure to bring.
