Malika’s salon now offers the Fish Pedicure Treatment

Journalist | December 16, 2010

Fancy a nibble? The ultimate pedicure treatment has arrived for the launch of Malika’s new salon in London’s One New Change. Opening its doors in St Paul’s, Malika’s salon will be their first offering the Fish Pedicure Treatment.

Using Garra Rufa fish is an increasingly popular and tranquil way to remove dead skin from your feet as tiny fish gently suck and nibble away, leaving your feet smooth and revitalised.

Founder of Malika, Ritu Patel, is very excited to bring fish therapy to the city of London and believes it is important for everyone to look after their feet. “Winter can be very punishing on our feet. It is easy to forget about your feet when you are hiding them away in socks and boots but it’s essential that we look after them. Our Fish Pedicure Treatment is an enjoyable and relaxing way to remove a build up of dead skin and maintain smooth, good looking feet all year round.”

The fish have no teeth and use a sucking motion to painlessly lift away dead skin without damaging the new healthy cells underneath, leaving you with a pleasant tingling sensation similar to a light massage.

While fish therapy might be the latest craze in London, these miniature pedicurists have been perfecting the feet of bathers for centuries. Found naturally in hot springs near Kangal, Turkey, the fish secrete the enzyme diathanol – which is believed to improve skin regeneration. Fish therapy has been used to treat skin conditions such as psoriasis and is suitable for anyone suffering from dry skin.

Upon arrival to Malika’s boutique the team will assist in transporting you from the chaos of city life and into utter relaxation, the perfect place to go with friends or just to have a mini pamper session in your lunch break, as you do not have to remove any clothing to enjoy the benefits of fish therapy just sock or tights and away you go.

One 40 minute treatment is 38 and includes:
* Washing/cleaning of feet prior to and post treatment
* 40 minutes fish pedicure treatment

Once you have taken the plunge into fishy water you’ll be a definite convert and can keep your feet perfectly polished all year round.

Malika has four state-of-the-art pools, which are filtered and fed by a constant oxygen supply to ensure clean water and a healthy environment for the fish. In addition, the pools are sterilised using ultra-violet lights.

Malika offers three lengths of treatments; 10 minutes (15), 25 minutes (25) and 40 minutes (38)

Threading is an effective and non-invasive way of removing hair

Journalist | December 8, 2010

Threading, a treatment which has become increasingly popular, is an extremely effective and non-invasive way of removing hair. Predominantly used to shape eyebrows, threading can also be used to remove unwanted hair from sensitive areas of the face such as the upper lip and chin. Threading guarantees a beautifully precise finish, encouraging stunning shape and definition.

MALIKA are specialists in the ancient art of threading. An exclusive hand-made formula of Ayurvedic oil is applied to the eyebrows to desensitise the follicle before starting the threading technique, which uses a piece of thread to twist, entwine and ease out the hair from the root.

Every new visitor to the salon receives a complimentary consultation where a highly trained MALIKA therapist expertly advises on emphasizing features and highlighting face and eyebrow shape for a flattering, eye opening effect. The stunning salon also has a discreet area for anyone wanting the hair removal process done in private and Malika also reserves salon chairs should customers want to have treatments done in a group.

For the ultimate pampering experience, the MALIKA method culminates in an invigorating Indian head massage. Additional treatments offered also include manicures, pedicures and Ayurvedic skin specific facials.

MALIKA has locations at the shopping villages of Westfield London, Bluewater, and One New Change.

Hair designer’s predictions for Royal Wedding

Journalist | November 30, 2010

Each year, Michael Van Clarke creates the catwalk looks for the Designer Wedding Show. Michael has styled the hair for nine Royal families, so with the recent engagement announcement of Kate and William, was the first to predict the look Kate might be wearing to walk down the aisle.

“Kate Middleton is the archetypal girl next door, she’s beautiful in a way that doesn’t intimidate us mere mortals and she’s always exquisitely polished; even when she’s out on the town we never see a sleek hair out of place. Her signature look is the bouncy blow-dry, and while this sassy style suits her personality and dress sense, for her Royal wedding something a little more regal and bridal is definitely in order.

Although the occasion will be incredibly formal and full of the splendor and ceremony befitting this long awaited date, we must remember that Kate and William are a young couple who have already broken old traditions, like not living together before marriage. Therefore a more modern looking dress and hairstyle are inevitable; something feminine, romantic and chic.”

The Michael Van Clarke Salon offers a must-have package that gives brides-to-be the key to achieving wedding day beauty. The ‘Van Clarke Wedding Package’ includes a bac-cial, luxury facial, full body massage, and manicure and pedicure; the five treatments will be given to brides-to-be across two visits and should be taken up to three weeks ahead of the ‘big day’ for maximum impact. These five luxury treatments allow brides to achieve perfection for only 250.

The Michael Van Clarke luxury hair salon offers the Diamond Dry Cut technique and has recently launched “3 More Inches” a range of protective, restorative and life extending products for hair including a Pre-wash Treatment, Shampoo and Conditioner.

Spapliance to provide state-of-the-art appliances for the Spa and Salon industry

Journalist | November 29, 2010

February 2011 will see the launch of a new company, Spapliance, and its first appliance, The Orb. Spapliance is the brainchild of Jane Scrivner and Kevin McWilliams who together have over 50 years combined experience in the Spa and Appliance manufacturing industry.

Spapliance will be providing state-of-the-art appliances for the Spa and Salon industry. Five appliances are currently planned and patents have been applied for. Each appliance answers an established need in the industry and each one makes the salon and spa industry more sophisticated and in line with the high end, high design, high performance requirement.

The first appliance that Spapliance will launch is called The Orb. The Orb is a portable, continuous heat chamber for warming skincare products.

The Orb addresses one of the fundamental needs and gaps in therapeutic treatment delivery: the ability to heat product, accurately and safely and to maintain the temperature continually and perfectly for up to one hour, so that every brush full of product is perfect every time and at every stage of the treatment and anywhere in the room.

The Orb, heats product within 10 minutes to a perfect delivery temperature and, through a patented applied process, the Orb, once removed from the heat source, is totally portable and maintains this perfect temperature, brush load after brush load, whenever and wherever for up to an hour. It has indicator lights to let the therapist know when it needs to be re heated – but within a standard body or facial treatment 60 minutes of perfection is – well perfection.

The Orb came about because there was a need for something for use by professional therapists when delivering facials and body treatments where warming the product is required. Currently, as soon as any heat source is removed or the product is removed from the heat source (hot towel cabinets, bowls resting on warm water, baby bottle warmers etc.) the temperature reduces – meaning the first brush-full is lovely, the second is okay but the following applications are relatively cool and so the experience deteriorates.

The Orb solves this and makes the client experience delicious from start to finish. It also means the therapist can concentrate on their client rather than spending ‘head space’ remembering when, where and how to keep their product warm.

The team at Spapliance also anticipate that as well as solving a ‘need’, the Orb will create a ‘demand’ for treatment delivery to be ‘upgraded’ with ‘Warm orb technology’ – even down to the simple oil application in Swedish massage, currently a ‘function’ within the treatment, with ‘Warm Orb technology’ oil application becomes a therapeutic experience in itself.

The Orb from Spapliance will be available from March 2011 at a cost of 145 (ex. VAT).

In June 2011, Spapliance will also be launching a personal version of The Orb into the retail market under the ‘Jane Scrivner’ label using Jane Scrivner products.

Aqua Sheko’s doctor fish move to Selfridges’ Birmingham

Journalist | November 16, 2010

Fish therapy is a unique beauty therapy treatment that uses Garra Rufa fish, a form of carp, to gently remove dead skin. The fish have no teeth and use a sucking motion to painlessly lift away dead skin without damaging the new healthy cells underneath, leaving you with a pleasant tingling sensation similar to a light massage. In addition, it is believed that Garra Rufa fish secrete an enzyme – diathanol – that improves skin regeneration.

Unable to contain the feeding frenzy within London anymore, the tiny finned pedicurists at Aqua Sheko, London’s first ever luxury fish spa, have finally splashed out of London and into Birmingham at a pop up spa in iconic department store Selfridges.

This is the first fish spa outside of London for Aqua Sheko and the second time they have partnered with Selfridges, following on from the success of their pop up spa in Selfridge’s flagship store in Oxford St. Located in the beauty hall on level 3 of Selfridges’ Birmingham in Upper Mall East, the bespoke pop up spa, features 2 tanks that have been installed following the same sleek oriental design as Aqua Sheko’s original London store in Kensington.

David Walker Smith, Beauty Buying Director for Selfridges, is excited about the new addition to the Birmingham store, “Aqua Sheko’s doctor fish have taken the London beauty scene by storm and we are thrilled to offer our customers an exciting new experience, which is the first of its kind in the Midlands” said David.

Fashionistas and shopaholics can take a load off and dip their tootsies into the tanks for taster treatments designed to revive feet, whether you are about to go on a spree or have had a long day shopping and need some R&R. One 15 minute treatment is 17, a 20 minute treatment is 20 and for the indulgent shopper, a 30 minute treatment is available for 30.

The winter chills might see you banishing your feet to boots and away from the light of day, but out of sight shouldn’t mean out of mind when it comes to caring for your feet. Karen Ho, Founder of Aqua Sheko, explains why it is important to maintain your feet all year round, “Skin tends to dry out in the winter and this can often lead to painful cracking around the heels if the dry skin is not removed. Fish therapy is a relaxing way to maintain your feet over the cooler months and save yourself the hassle and embarrassment of unsightly feet come sandal season next year or if you are planning a winter sun break.”

Once you have taken the plunge into fishy water you’ll be a definite convert but as the pop up spa will only be in Selfridges Birmingham until Christmas, you’ll need to get you fix quick.

Cannelle invests in the latest Intense Pulsed Light technology to remove hair from unwanted areas

Journalist | November 10, 2010

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), a new non-surgical cosmetic treatment, is a technology aimed at producing light of high intensity during a very short period of time and is both a method of hair removal and photo-rejuvenation of the skin already hugely popular with A-listers.

Renowned in the best salons worldwide, IPL improves the appearance of rosacea, flushing, broken capillaries, sun damaged skin, age spots and skin texture, as well as mild acne scars, tightens pores and softens fine lines. Photo-rejuvenation is particularly effective in enhancing the areas often exposed such as face, neck, chest and hands.

IPL permanent hair reduction is also a painless and highly effective treatment for removing hair from unwanted areas. During photo-epilation, the pigment (melanin) within hair absorbs the light and converts it into heat. The hair transmits this heat into the hair follicle, which it destroys, without damaging the epidermis thus the follicle cannot produce a new hair. A clinical breakthrough in hair removal, the uniquely shaped pulses of light deliver heat only in the therapeutic range, precisely heating their target with little or no damage or discomfort.

Cannelle, a small collection of beauty salons in Oxfordshire, is launching IPL at their Henley salon. Cannelle has invested in the latest IPL technology to perform quick and simple treatments that significantly improve your skin’s complexion.

France Baudet, owner of Cannelle, says: “Messy, painful and ineffective hair removal methods can be a thing of the past! Best of all, this non-invasive and effective approach yields permanent hair reduction and long-term hair removal anywhere on the body.”

As this treatment works by lasers absorbing the pigment in skin and hair it is not suitable for red, white or blonde hair and extremely dark skin tone. A minimum of 6 -12 sessions is usually required to remove all unwanted hair depending on hair and skin colour.

David Popham opens second hairdressing salon in Oxford

Journalist | November 9, 2010

David Popham has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in hairdressing. Highlights include his apprenticeship with Vidal Sassoon in the 60′s and 70′s. David worked through the ranks at Sassoon’s to the post of Creative Director in the New York salon.

Cutting edge techniques, driven by clients’ preference, will be very much in evidence when David and Shirley Popham open their second hairdressing salon in Oxford’s Summertown district. The new salon is located in the fashionable and vibrant South Parade and will open this week with a launch party between 6pm and 9pm. Like the original Popham Salon in North Parade Avenue, the new salon is also a Sassoon Professional Partnership salon.

Objectives are to have five salons in operation over a period of five years. David says of the second launch: “Despite the UK’s deep financial recession, over the past two years we have increased sales and the salon has continued to attract an abundance of discerning clients who both value and recommend our service. The new salon will bring us welcome extra chair space to meet that demand.”

The new salon will feature Popham’s unique three-way mirror workstation allowing stylists to see as they work, in 3D. David says: “I can’t’ imagine trying to create a three dimensional work without seeing clients in the round.” Blue Orbit Design and Beauty Planet shop fitters have helped create a fresh salon design. Based on the original salon, basins will be located at bespoke workstations, which because of the generous proportions afford a feeling of privacy and personal space for the customer.

The contemporary colour scheme of raspberry and white will complement the purple hues of the original salon giving a feeling of continuity.

David will spend two days a week at the new salon cutting and styling hair. Additional staff will include: Tuc Rojas, who came to Popham from New York City and has been a pivotal member of the Popham team for the past eight years – Reagan Willimont, who was trained by David, is now a senior stylist and has been with Popham for the past five years.

David opened the first Popham Salon in 1981 and has been in partnership with his wife Shirley since 1989. The Popham’s are particularly proud of their winning service formula which sees a huge investment in its staff. David says: “The ethos of the salons is to invest in our people, so they invest in our clients. It is simply no use stipulating a tight service script if the staff are not on our side. We ensure the staff love and enjoy their work, feel appreciated and rewarded and own the Popham culture. This strategy, together with the inspirational creative and craft training of Sassoon adds up to a service beyond rival.”

- It helps promote a better oxygenation and penetration of skincare products
- Facilitate the gentle elimination of the dead cells that dull the complexion
- Instantly refines and smoothes skin texture leaving skin soft and refreshed
- Immediately reveals a soft radiant skin which is smooth to the touch.
- Improves visible skin firmness and resilience.
- It stimulates the production of collagen
- It helps stimulate the skin’s immunity system

Following an hour facial your skin will be left visibly younger, brighter and fresher, with a marked decrease in the depth, volume and appearance of your wrinkles.
