Never underestimate the power of the sun, even in this country, because the results will be painful. If you have forgotten to apply sun screen and are suffering the effects of too much enjoyment in the sun, relief is at hand.

Cannelle in LA Fitness Oxford has seen an increase in demand of spray tans over salon cream tans with spray tans recently accounting for 40% of their total treatments. The biggest trend change all of the Cannelle salons are seeing however is colour.

France Baudet, Managing Director of Cannelle explains: Fake tan is the one fastest-growing areas of cosmetics and there is a definite trend emerging for a more natural skin colour. Our sales have not been impacted but there is a defining movement from previous deep dark colours to the desire for a healthy glow. Shimmery tans are also out and an orange tan is now being seen as poor taste.

We know it is proven that people feel better with a tan and we have also found that more than ever our clients want tans all year round, although of course we still have huge peaks in demand for tanning in the summer and for Christmas parties in particular.

My advice is if you applying at home then apply lightly two or more thin layers in a natural colour close to your skin tone to eliminate going the wrong shade of streaking. For the best results before you go on holiday or for a big event, go to a salon. If you are pressed for time enjoy a natural golden spray tan. If you have a little more time try a tanning treatment that involves massage and exfoliation like a luxurious Dcleor tanning treatment where your whole body and face is massaged with Dcleor exfoliant cream followed by a smooth application of the Dcleor self tan product.

TIPS FOR TANNING TREATMENTS

1. Orange is a definite no! Healthy glow is in!

2. Buff your skin twice a week in the shower with a skin polisher or body scrub. It gets rid of skin cells and promotes all over radiant skin. Make sure you buff before you go for your tanning treatment but dont exfoliate and moisturise immediately before applying the self-tanning product as it creates an uneven surface that in turn causes an uneven tan.

3. Think carefully about how your skin would tan naturally so use less on the underside of your arms for example. Moisturize your skin, especially places like elbows, as dry skin increases the chance of streaking.

4. In addition, change your make up to suit the season. Ditch foundation and powders that feel heavy on your skin and try tinted moisturisers instead. Go for a lighter fresher look. Neutral and light coloured eye shadows are great for summer.

5. Make sure your skin glows with natural health by drinking lots of water to boost your complexion.

6. If you are doing fake tanning at home, wear latex gloves when applying your self-tanning lotion and then afterwards wash your hands immediately. Alternatively have someone help you! If you have time, do a test run on a small patch on your body otherwise apply the self-tanner to your body in thin layers and smooth strokes. Reduce amounts on your knees and elbows as they often absorb the tanning lotion more. Dont forget to do the top of your feet so you look great in your summer shoes. Wait at least 15 minutes before getting dressed or sitting down to allow the lotion to dry. The truth is though it can be messy and difficult to do well if in a rush. If you are time-poor a spray tan will really give you that convincing look without the streaks.

7. Fake tanning doesnt have to be a drag. Turn it into a bit of relaxing you time. Look out for treatments in salon like the Declor Sunrise Self-Tanning Body. Have your whole body and face massaged with Declor exfoliant cream followed by a smooth application of the Dcleor self tan product.

8. Afterwards add a beautiful glow to your skin by adding a touch of shimmer to your cheek bones, shoulders and collarbone.

9. Wearing pale coloured nail polish on your hands will really help accentuate your great new tan.

10. Nothing beats a professional salon tanning treatment but when pressed for time and money I recommend LOreal Sublime Bronze One Day tinted gel. Genuinely no streaks, no odour (as it contains no tanning agents) and a gorgeous smooth tan immediately. Great for a night out or apply after your morning shower for an instant all over tan.

Antioxidants can help protect our skin by ingesting the key potent antioxidant vitamins A, C, E and D. This does not preclude the need to use sunscreens however, which will not only provide antioxidant protection, but also guards against sunburn and inflammation.

Several studies have demonstrated that antioxidant dense foods may increase the skin’s tolerance to ultraviolet (UV) exposure. A 2006 Journal Of Nutrition study concluded that a high antioxidant flavonoid rich cocoa drink increased the body’s ability to tolerate UV rays and improved overall skin health.

Other studies have shown the role antioxidants in sun protection internally, one in The Journal of Carcinogenesis, showed that an omega-3 fatty acid – EPA reduced the risk of developing skin cancer by prolonging the time in getting sun burnt during UV ray exposure. Another study showed that supplementing with beta-carotene supplements for 10 weeks provided protection against sunburn.

The British Society of Investigative Dermatology has reported that eating a tomato paste-rich diet assisted the body in the fight against free radicals and helped the skin to protect itself from the sun by about 33 per cent. It was found that that lycopene, an antioxidant abundant in cooked tomatoes, was responsible for the internal skin protection assistance.

Rick Hay, Nutritionist and Naturopath for Fushi Wellbeing, supports this theory. “Vitamins A, C, E and D are crucial to protect the skin from the aging effects of UV exposure. More and more clinical evidence is indicating that antioxidant-rich foods, superfoods and supplements may have a role in protecting the skin from the damaging effects of the sun and may help prevent premature skin aging.”

“Ideally, you should be able eat your way through a varied diet to get your essential antioxidants. By adding the superfoods that include berries, tomatoes preferably cooked, dark green veggies – al of which are diet must haves for sun protection. It is also important to top up on GLA and linoleic acid – omega 3.6.9.s. which help the skin’s moisture levels and are anti-inflammatory. And, then there is vitamin B, which has a role to play in keep the skin moisturised, but also helps against hyper-pigmentation.”

Rick continues, “In recent years, there has been more research into the role of supplements in protecting against sun damage. What you need to look for are those that have a strong high ORAC level, which measures the strength of antioxidants, such as acai and Goji or any of the superfood supplements.’

The problem is, however, that, for a variety of reasons, we do not get our optimum level of nutrients purely from food, which is why supplements have a role to play.
And, additionally, the higher the quality of supplement, the better the benefits over a longer term. It’s like tightening the strings in a tennis racket, the benefits go far beyond of sun protection into realm of anti-aging. Think natural face lift.”

Directions for use:

1. Cleanse, tone AND MOISTURISE! – Even if you have oily skin! Many girls avoid moisturisers because they believe they contain oils which promote spots. In fact if you choose a moisturiser that contains ‘purifying oils’ you will reap the benefits of well-nourished skin without spot problems. This movement separates and coats each lash at the same time, for maximum coverage and instantly thicker, bolder lashes.

7. Everyone has sad skin days. The moment you notice an obvious spot, cover with a medicated concealer and re-style your hair! * The face and neck are the areas most commonly affected by sun damage, so be sure to apply sunscreen to lips, ears, around eyes, neck and scalp if your hair is thinning.

What should we look out for?

Look out for new or existing moles that are darkly pigmented, change in colour and/or size, have an irregular outline and itch, bleed or crust. If you are unsure or concerned that you may have one or more of these symptoms, visit your GP. He or she will examine your skin and would be able to refer you to a Plastic Surgeon with a specialist interest in skin cancer.
